i searched and read helms manual but it only shows how to remove the whole sunroof panel, but i'm trying to find out how to go about removing the headliner piece thats on the underside of the sunroof panel ? (on 90 crx si)

in 2004 car was painted by maaco, and ever since it makes noise around the headliner of the sunroof panel, it squeaks and moves around, i don't think they put it back together correctly,

so i wanted to see if i can remove it and put it back how its supposed to, cause they might of just glued it or something, cause if you press on it, it sort of sticks and then releases, like its not stuck against the panel all the way.

anyone know how it comes off ? or other things i can do ? thanks

I have a 90 Civic SI and I just redid the headliner about a month ago. I followed this and it's almost identical to ours.

thanks, i checked the link to the post out,


so far it seems like you pull the outter rubber thing off of the sunroof panel or something ? to get to the headliner and be able to remove it ? but not sure i totally understand correctly?, if you don't mind, can you explain any more detail on how to do it so i can understand better ?

seems the best thing would be for me to just remove the sunroof panel, then i can see everything better and look under it around the headliner to see how it comes off ?

or maybe its not as complex as i am thinking and the sunroof headliner could simply just be stuck on with headliner spray adhesive ? if so, then i guess you peel it off and put fresh headliner adhesive . . . ?

any info would be cool, thnx

I think you're over thinking it like you said haha. There's 8 or maybe 10 10mm bolts that need to be removed to remove the sunroof assembly. Then you'll need at least two people total to get the sunroof assembly out because it's awkward to remove. There's a 10mm not holding down a gold bracket on each side of the sunroof assembly. Those pictures are on the link to the thread that I posted. Bend the brackets up after removing the nuts, I only did one side though haha. Then slide the sunroof sliding piece out of the assembly. Like the guy in that thread said, it will take some fighting, but it'll come out.

are you talking about the vinyl that is on the underside of the metal panel that moves?

its just stuck on by plastic button clips. you can pull it back, but you will likely break the plastic clips, then you have the problem of prying off the buttons from the metal frame and then reinserting them into the vinyl. its really not simple and easily done.

i bet maaco never touched it or took it off. if theres something rattling inside, its just the panel rusting and breaking off internally. i doubt you could do much to fix it either.

having been there and done it, i suggest you not bother trying it yourself.

and to take the panel off, you just undo those small 8mm (or 10mm?) head bolts holding the brackets down on the sliders.

10mm, there are four of them. keep in mind you will need to remove the stoppers (which are most likely have cracked) to remove the panel.
when i removed mine, the liner cracked, instead of the plastic clips. I ended up making moulds and casting four new slide stoppers to replace the cracked ones.

thanks for the reply tyson, i know you have good knowledge about lot of stuff and i always like when i see any reply from you on any post cause your answers are trusted.

yes you are correct, i was talking about the vinyl on the bottom side of the panel, and after your description i know how its attached now, and whats involved in taking it off, and your probably right about not worth messing with it.

but just to further explain exactly what happens, when i'm driving, mostly on uneven or bumpy roads, theres squeaky noises coming from the vinyl on bottom of the sunroof panel and once i put my hand up and press against it upward, the sound immediately stops, so it seems to me like the vinyl headliner thing on bottom of sunroof panel was loose or not adhered good enough, causing it to move and shift around a little when going over bumps and stuff, but maybe i'm wrong ? can it maybe be caused from something else in the sunroof area ?
thats loose or needing adjusting ?


maybe the whole sunroof panel needs to be tightened so it is pushed upward more (if theres an adjustment for that), something similar as if you were pushing it from the bottom upward, cause when it was pushed against it made the sound stop,

any thoughts ? its just annoying, i know its a 21 yr old car and theres other noises while riding around, but i have slowly fixed a few of the noises and this one is the most promenent, and just trying to think of way to make it go away.

if you want my advise, remove the liner, toss the clips, and then using the old liner as a guide, cut a piece out of lexan, cover it with either vinyl or leather and a thin layer of foam and using velcro, attach the new liner to the sunroof panel.
keep in mind, the panel is most likely rusting through, so be ready for surprises.

i dunno, ive had a similar if not the same issue with squeeks coming from the sunroof.

they kinda just went away.

try cleaning and greasing the rails, hitting it harder to dislodge the rust, or whatever else that might be causing the noise. im sure i did each of those things at one point or another.
