How can you tell if your wheel bearing is going out?
I have a 90 civic hatch and for the last couple of weeks my car sound like I am riding on some off road mud tires. One of my friend says that it is a sign of my wheel bearing going out. Is he right? I just want to confirm this before I start taking things apart. Thanks

yep.
jack the corner up, turn the wheel with your hands. you should hear the noise. try not to confuse it with the brakes dragging tho.
forget what ppl say about shaking your wheel. you should do it anyway to check your balljoints. but its not the way to check wheel bearings.

Are you saying that it should sound like bad or worn out brakes if I turn it. I'll try that out now.

You can also tell by driving the car and loading each side by turning the wheel turn left and it loads the right side and vice versa....use your ears and tell front to back. Then you can double check once you get an idea where....if you have done it a few times you can tell which one just by driving.

It sounds like your left sides bad. If you can put it up on a lift and have somebody drive it in the air you should be able to here it.

i heard you can also test the wheel bearing by spinning the wheel and holding the spring, if the spring vibrates then thats the wheel bearing that needs to be replaced

Can you test the front tires this way? I would assume that you need to put the tranny in neutral, but can you spin the tires fast enough on the front to diagnose a bad wheel bearing?
