Default The h22 CRX si (re)Build thread...

Ok for all ya wanting some install info on the h22 I will try to take some pics while I redo this car.

Currently I had bought a 91 hf that had the front end hit on it....spent money at the frame shop to have it fixed and came to find out the rear beam was also replaced before that...and it was off quite a bit so I decided to get another crx to put my setup in.
Notice the core support is wrong...I never really had looked close at one before. The seller gave me the support and it turned out to be for a civic sedan not a crx.
So the front end never lined up right.

Heres what I have now.....
Started as this:

During:

Done:

Now after deciding not to mess with this shell anymore I picked up this poor 88 si.
It has way more rust than I thought and I paid too much to let it go...I was thinking quarters only...heh by the time I got the plastic off and searching around its got a ton....but I gotta fix it.

Stay tuned I've done quite a bit of repair already just gotta unload the camera....

Heres some more on it.....

Sorry its so dark on some of these. Here is what the rocker and quarters look like to begin with:

The only thing I hate about these aftermarket panels are the holes for the trim are not there...I will have to cut them in somehow.

I have the drivers side on....Notice you _don't_ have to use the entire panel I needed only to replace the lower part of the arch. You can get inside the car and look to see where there is rust at on the wheel wells if you have the trim removed inside the car.

And the Rocker...
'
Still need to go back a make a few more passes with the welder to add some strength in.
-Notice I am no body man by any means...this stuff takes me forever to do and thank God there are areas that are covered up. I will be using fiberglass filler where the welds are just to clean the areas up where the seams are.

Here's where I am now working on the passenger side.....

Fixing the inner support....

I have the rocker pretty much mocked up. Some how the rail on this side is pushed in about 1/2 inch. I'm guessing with the rocker being rusted on the underside that let it flex in bit by bit. Porterpower to the rescue I eased it back into line and I'm ready to weld the rocker on. Then onto the passenger arch and ready for mud.

Same bat channel same bat time......

Yea the inner support on the bottom I had to cut out. The red part on the bottom pic is the lower part of that inner support. Below that is the jack point....its between the 2 lower c clamps. Mine were ok just a little rust which I used some convertor on I'm hoping it wont do much now. I am painting everything to try to keep it from coming back anywhere.

Should have some more pics sunday been too busy after work to get anything done much this week.

Ok got some more repair done...i can almost smell the body work stage.

I think if I was to do this all over again....I wouldn't repair the quarters. I would of just done the rockers for the strength and used some fiberglass bondo and fixed the quarters with that. I bet you would get at least 5 years before the rust came back enough to notice. By then Id prob be onto another project or I could just grind it down again and do it over. Oh well back to the sheetmetal!

Got the rocker on....

Heres what I was working on replacing this time...

Measure how far up you need to cut to get the rust/dents...

Grab a nibbler.....

Transfer your measurements onto your quarter...it dosent have to be exact.

Cut out the quarter and lay it on the car...take a marker and trace around it and cut it out as close as possible where it will set. Cut the quarter on the car and use a drill to remove the pinch welds in the wheel well.

I then cut out any more offending metal and replace some of it...the rest I will do when the quarter is on so I can seal it in.

I painted on the inside to help control any rust....

Put the quarter on the car and it should just fit inside your cutout.

Weld it up doing tacks here and there so you dont get it hot...just take your time...I would do a few tacks and do something else for a min or so then do more etc.

I also did a bit more on the other side finishing the inside of the wheelwell.

I'm so ready to be done with this bodywork. I think it will be fine when I get done but man it takes forever to do. I've never done this stuff before so I know its not the best but I hope it will be passable when its all done with.

Seeya in another week or so with more updates.

Just some shots of bodywork.... I hate it.
Takes me forever to do I am soooooo ready to get past this part and get some paint on it.

fiberstrand filler........

lightweight filler (bondo)

And here is a hood I made....I don't know if I am gonna like it but I want to see it with paint on it before I decided on another route. It is a ridgeline center hump on a crx hood.

There is much to do to the body still the quarters are almost done as of now and I need to start fitting the rest of the parts and making sure everything will install before I go farther.

I moved some pics around in photobucket...lemme edit and make sure they are linked right......is that the only post with no pics coming up?

edit....should be fixed now

I got the rockers from a company called ...mill supply... or something to that effect. They were actually for a civic and were about 6 inches or so too long so I had to cut them down. Its not the prettiest inside the wheel wells now but its something you will never see.
I'll see if I can dig you up the link to thier website here soon.
Really if you can find some rust free stock ones that would be the way to go. I really didnt like the fitment of these but I had already spent the money on them.

msinsky14-- how much did you pay for the rust removal?
And yea like I said I had too much in this to just throw it away...besides not that many 88 si ones running around you can get ahold of. 89-91 all the time but not the 88s.

Just a little more bondo and the quarters are done worked more on them tonight just a couple spots. I got some rust free doors from the junkyard a while back but lots of little dings in thoes so I got some bondo on thoes too.

Next up is fittin everything to make sure the outside is all ready before I start tearing down my current rex and getting the engine bay clearenced.

Had some projects to do before I got a chance to mess with this car again.

The blue car is now torn down and the engine is fitted to the new car with a skunk2 intake.
If you thought the original intake was tight in there this one is damn near impossible to fit in the bay. I'm at the point where I want it running before I finish the bodywork so getting the thing mobile is job 1 right now.

I'll try to get back on track with pics and everything here soon.

Before I can get the engine back in I need a 5th gear syncro and I have no idea where to get one for a jdm tranny. Hell I don't know at this point if they are even diffrent so more leg work until I can put it back in.

Update and ttt for Grunt who wanted to see pics.

Transmission is back togather the gears are the same as the US ones.
Waiting for clutch and flywheel to arrive since my 6puck decided to eat the damn pressure plate and flywheel. These cars will never need anything other than a stock clutch unless you have some serious money in the H to warrant it.

The engine bay is done and painted and I'll get some pics snapped soon.
