check your injectors!!!! I have had the same problems since I bought my rex a couple months ago, and one day I was looking in the neighborhood of my injectors and I noticed one had made a little mess on my intake manifold runners, I figured it was the rings so I went to honda and the total cost was 56 bucks, if that doesn't work, I'd check the fuel filter next, mine had never been changed in its life it looked like

check the pressure o ring on your injectors, that might be the problem, i dought it tho, for the simple fact that if the o ring was out or is going out the injector would leak, and you would smell it even if the car was warm. i know that the ecu dumps fuel into the motor until it warms up (dont know why yet but trying to figure out) and that makes the car of course run rich, which would create that gas smell.

On initial startup the motor is cold, or rather "not warmed up" yet. The ecu/fast idle sensor compensates for this by revving up the motor and having it idle higher until it warms up to operating temperature, then drops it back down again. Since the idle is higher, the ecu dumps extra fuel into the cylinders, then reduces it as the idle drops. This all is done so that the motor reaches it's operating temperature faster, especially in these cold NY winters
