Finding TDC on sohc
I took a look at my crank pulley and there are no marks for finding TDC. I guess I'll have to find TDC the old fashioned way by using a long screwdriver in cylinder #1 and turning the crank by way of ratchet until it reaches the top of it's stroke and determine weather or not it's on it's compression stroke by looking at the dizzy to see if the rotor is pointing to spark plug one. Sounds right or is there a better way of finding TDC on a sohc?

Re: Finding TDC on sohc
tdc on the cam is when the arrow is pointing straight up*
tdc on the rotating assembly are based on the lines on the crank timing gear (not the pulley) and the oil pump on the block. tdc is when the lines are matched up.
opps, sorry mods, just saw how old the post it. haha.

with the cylinder head off wouldn't the piston be flush to the top of the block? oops, wait a second...at zero compression right? heck, i dunno...

Re: Finding TDC on sohc
sheesh....if the engine is still together...try this "old-school" trick...
#1...pull the #1 spark plug wire out and #1 spark plug out of it's hole.
#2...get into car and put key in ignition.
#3...very quickly tap the key to the start position repeatedly and listen (or have a helper) listen for a loud CHUFF come out of the #1 cylinder bore. When you hear that noise...you are on compression stroke.
#4...you're welcome

Re: Finding TDC on sohc
First thing i would do is(with the belt on) turbo the crank till the cam gear is pointing the words UP, well, up. then pull the belt off, pull the #1 plug and move the crankshaft. you then will see if it is TDC or not.
