Default exhaust silencer

i just bought this exhaust silencer on ebay. and it fits fine, but it doesn't make my exhaust much quieter. is there any modifications i can make to the silencer to make it work a little better?

assuming the piece does fit snug in your exhaust then the idea posted above will work really well for quieting it down.

That mod would make the tip similar to these:
http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/tips.htm

Except they're using fiberglass instead of steel wool.

The general idea does work. The size of the holes will determine what frequency range is muffled.

Glasspacks have been a standard for performance exhausts for decades; the fiberglass muffles the sound enough to keep it legally quiet but come as close to a straight pipe as possible. I'm surprised you've never heard of it before. Low quality ones sound terrible, though.

Run a catalytic, OEM Exhaust Manifold, and a Resonator.

or better yet get a proper exhaust, not a fart can.

Yup. I have a 30 year old car with 16 year old glasspacks on it. Sounds the same today as it did when I installed the exhaust. As long as you don't get the "muffler" too hot, the fiberglass stays fine. They're little more than a fiberglass packed resonator.

However, if you place a glasspack directly after the header collector or cat, the heat can blow the fiberglass out, and you end up with an empty echo chamber. Sure looks cool as flaming fiberglass comes flying out of the exhaust tip under a WOT pull though...

ok....here's what i did. redbull can filled with steel wool. SUPER GHETTO!!...i know. but it works..it's really quiet now. i put a ton of holes in the redbull can. i would have drilled holes in the exhaust silencer itself, but my drill isn't strong enough to drill through it..it's pretty thick steel..i could only manage a couple of holes in it for the screws that hold the can on.

my question is.. do you guys think this is too restrictive on my exhaust? my exhaust is straight through all the way back to the muffler. i don't have a CAT...i just have a resonator where the cat would normally be. so this silencer is the only restriction.

yeah...looks like i'm gonna have to get a new can and reduce the amount of holes or something...it's STILL too loud. i duno...maybe more steel wool too.

does anyone know if it can do any major damage if there i'm causing too much backpressure? i'm not even sure if i'm causing too much...just curious

Your car is going to be loud no matter what if it's a straight pipe, ***** probably raspy as hell.

Like i said just get a proper exhaust, don't try to run a straight exhaust if it's not a track car.

it is a track car. i just wanna quiet it down for when i occasionally drive it around town.

hence me not wanting to spend a lot of money on a full exhaust. thanks for the attitude though...it really helps my situation! you guys are so helpful!

It's technically not a "track car" if it driven on the streets.

Seriously, no matter what a straight exhaust is going to be loud as ****, i have a way better solution for you one you might even take me up on.... invest in a Electric Cut-out for your exhaust get a nice name brand one though, no ebay crap because they tend to leak.... run a nice exhaust for the streets, open it up for the track.
