Default Electronic VSS question

Im trying to install a dc cluster into my 90 civic 4 door and i have a few questions about how to get an electronic vss working.

i have a newly installed rywire tucked harness, which already has a built in vss plug. All the how-to guides for the cluster swap include how to wire in the electronic vss, but id like to use the plug that came on my new harness to keep my nice wire tuck. My guess is that by being integrated into the new harness the power, ground, and signal for the vss to the ecu would be good to go. Since the rywire subharness taps into the stock ecu pin for vss (pin #16 on plug B) it gets the speed signal to the ecu. wouldn't it then make sense that i could tap the integra cluster speedo wire into the same B16 pin and i would have a working speedo??

Any input or ideas would be great!

there are two grey plugs that come from the stock dash harness that plug into the crx instrument cluster. one is a 12 pin and the other is an 8 pin. the 8 pin connector should have a yellow/red wire. this wire is the vss wire that goes to b16 at the ecu. this is what you will tap into to get the dc cluster speedometer working.

When i did my dc cluster swap i tapped into the wire going to the ecu and everything works. the stock cluster converts the mechanical signal to an electronic signal for the ecu

Let me get this right. You kept the mechanical VSS in the trans though?

The way I read about the electronics VSS previously was that you had to replace the portion in the trans and there were a couple wires you had to route to the cluster.

eventually the cable connects to something that turns and produces electrical current for the gauge to display.

I thought the VSS in the trans ran all the way to the back of the cluster where it connected to the speedo which transformed it into the signal for the speedometer. That was my understanding. Getting an electrical VSS was one of the draw backs of the newer clusters into our old EFs, from what I have read in the past. Something could have changed though. I'm wrong more often than I would like to be.

you described exactly what i said.
yes, the cable runs to the cluster, into the speedo, which spins quickly and produces current. It's the same idea as an electric VSS.

3 wires: 12v, ground, signal. (on the electric VSS)

You would just have to gut your current speedo and tap into the terminal for the VSS signal.

both methods work. whatever you have on hand will work.

Oh, sweet. Basically, the electronic VSS on the transmission just tranforms it there instead of at the back of the cluster? I'm getting it now.

There are a lot of bad write ups out there. I was very misinformed on this topic. Shame on the world.

when i originally swapped to my dc cluster, i pulled apart a spare ef cluster, removed the mechanical portion, traced the power, ground and signal out put then wired it up. then put the assembly in a plastic bag and tucked it under the dash.

now i have converted to using an electronic vss from a 96-00 civic dx/ex
