My car doesnt run the same when the check engine comes on. I think it might be the ecu that's messed up. that's what the mechanic said but ima change it to see if it still happens

It's one of three things. Wiring, Distributor, Ecu.

Was the car originally MPFI? Or did you do the conversion?

for my friends car, the harness was done by Rywire, the whole engine harness and jumper harness, obd0 to obd1

While Rywire has really high quality control, it is possible that they had messed up or (more likely) that the wires or pins from the harnesses provided are in some way bad.

Check the connections within the round 8 pin connector on the distributor and the connections C1 and C2 at the ecu. If those all check out and you have tried a good distributor and ecu, you may need to trace the wiring.

Here are links that show the factory flow charts for fixing code 9, refer to those.

my hatch was throwing a code 9 as well but it was my distributor...i took the cap and rotor off to find nothing but orange (copper) coil unwrapped allll over the place...it looked like throw up....so i replaced my dizzy and had the same damn code and replaced it for a 3rd time (this time brand new dizzy) and the code went away....my buddy threw a code 9 but it was his ecu ....good luck??
