Default D16 Rod/Crank Specs

Hey Honda-tech

I need to find a source of reliable information that will give me detailed specs on Honda engines. I can only seem to find the basics when I search, not the in depth details like journal radius. I am specifically looking for the d16. Background is that I am rebuilding my d16a6, and the machine shop called me and said the rods I got from a guy not too far from were too small, they did not fit my crank or bearings. So I compared them to the old d16a6 rods, and they were 3mm smaller in journal diameter (my father measured them because I am at school). Anybody know of a reliable source that can help me out with the information I am looking for?

Did he take into account the bearings?

Crower lists rod dimensions on their site btw.

The machine shop said that the rods were too small. I had my mom pick up some rods from a contact for a d16a6 tonight and compare them to the old d16a6 rods, and they are 3 mm smaller. I am two hours from home, so I cannot look at this stuff which angers me even more. The original rods are 48mm bore at the crank journal, and the ones I picked up are 45mm apparently.

I looked on Crower's site and comfirmed that the rods are supposed to be 48mm for all d16 models. So the d16z6 and d16a6 have the same journal bores on their rods. And if the rods my contact gave me are 45mm, I don't wanna say he is bullshitting, but twice in a row is quite a coincidence isn't it? Are there perhaps two different rod sizes for this model engine? I know that is highly unlikely, but I seem to remember hearing something about the d16a6 having two different cranks, between the 88-89 and 90-91 models?

The difference I heard was the block itself(different girdle construction).

What I think happened is you just got ripped off and those weren't A6 rods, but rather D15 rods(which have 45mm journals).

Wow that is a great source of info. I am going to hold on to that. My question's just gotten more confusing though... Let me show you.

http://crower.com/cat/import/honda/rods/rods.shtml Go here and look up BE Bore for the D16 series engines. It says here that the bore on the connecting rod is 1.89 inches, which comes out to be 48mm.

The above given spreadsheet with the specs for the rod says the journal diameter is supposed to be 1.7707-1.7717 inches which comes out to be 45mm.

So here is my problem. Both of these sources have come up with numbers that coincide with my problem. My original (and unusable) rods are measuring at 48mm, and the new ones are measuring at 45mm.

The only factor unknown is if the bearings are still inside the big ends of the rods, which I will find out tomorrow.

When the guy at the machine shop called, he said I gave him rods from a D15. I am going to call back in the morning and ask him to measure the bore on the journal openings though.

Hope this does not confuse anybody as much as it has confused me. Seems like all my planning got shot to sh*t real fast...

Thanks for the help.

Brian

Yeah that is what I thought, but I called my mom and had her read the piston number off to me, PM6 - d16a6 piston. So I'm pretty sure it is right. I am going to call the machine shop tomorrow and have him give me the specifications on the rods. Will update.

Well, that would make sense as you'd have to compensate for bearing thickness.

D15s have 42mm rod journals, and have 45mm BE bores. Coincides with the D16's 45mm journals and 48mm BE.

Best way to figure out what rods those are is to measure the length(D15 is 134mm long, 137mm for D16), as the pistons could have been swapped on there.

Hmm... I definitely think I got screwed somewhere. I ended up purchasing some aftermarket rods off fjdistributors after comfirmining the 1.89in (48mm) BE bore. This will probably be beneficial in the long run anyways because even though I am doing a small NA high compression build, one of the bigger shortcomings with the D-series engines are the stock rods. Thanks fellas.
