Default D15/y8/EF Axles?

I'm doing a mini me on my rebuilt D15. Putting in a D16y8 transmission with it but am unsure what axles to install, ones for my D15 that had the 4 speed transmission or axles for a D16y8?

Also, the axles I took off my EF have different size axle retaining nuts. The drivers side was 29 mm but the passenger side was 32mm. Is that how it's supposed to be?

Any info would really help as I'm in the middle of trying to get my car running again. Thanks guys!

Sounds like you have a different hub on one side of your car. Your are using a hydraulic transmission in your car?

So, update. I took the old passenger side axle and fit it into the drivers' side hub, fits perfectly. Took the old drivers' side axle and fit it into the passenger side hub, fits perfectly. Not sure why they're different sizes, 32mm passenger/29mm driver, but I'm told the new ones I ordered are both 32mm. Let's hope they work out.

stock std hubs have smaller holes. your hubs could have been replaced. the transmission end is the same on all d series transmissions and d series axles, so your current axles will be a direct pop in

So yeah, even the replacement axles I got are too large. The old ones have 23 teeth on the spline, the new ones have 26, so no go. I'm just gonna rebuild my old ones with new cv boots/clamps. Problem now is finding new axle nuts 29 and 32 mm. FML

i would say just source out both front knuckles that use the 32mm nuts. i have put y7 axles into a ef before with no problem.

Does anyone know if the base model EF (the CX as i understand) came with different hubs? This is beyond frustrating. The outboard splines have 23 teeth and the half shaft nuts have completely different thread pitch as well. This is irritating the **** outta me. The problem has to be the hubs.

So evidently the base model EF and the CRX HF have different hubs than the DX/SI, etc. The bearings and knuckles are the same though so I guess I have to replace the hubs. Again... FML

from what i have seen, only the crx HF had different smaller hubs. like i said, source out both front knuckles just to be sure. any EF (thats not an EX trim) has them. i have a base hatch sitting outside and it has regular hubs like any other civic.

Are you using a cable to hydro conversion kit as well for that transmission?

Yes. From Innovative. I ordered their EF D-series with hyro mounts and conversion. Got the K4F already but I need the throwout bearing, fork clip, and fork before I can get the motor back in.

I looked up the replacement parts and the only difference from the others that the base model EF and CRX HX have is different hubs.

i have owned 2 Std hatches and nothing was different from any other civic. i just know that i can take newer axles and put them in an older chassis from experience.

Okay, well not on this one evidently, so I measured everything

Drivers side:
Axle nut: 29 mm
Spine thread diameter: 20 mm
Spline diameter: 24mm

Passenger side:
Axle nut: 32 mm
Spline thread diameter: 22mm
Spline diameter: 24 mm

Does anyone know what the hell is going on? They're clearly not the same.

ok so i guess i was wrong and after further research yes the std hatches had smaller hubs like the hf crxs. guess the hatches i had both had gotten them switched out.

i still stick with my earlier statement tho. just get DX knuckles and u'll be able to use any d series driver axle from 88-00 which will make replacements a lot easier to find. just my .02

Yeah, I'm just gonna buy some from the junk yard then get new axles with a lifetime warranty. Thanks a lot for your help V.MoMO, much appreciated.
