I'm sure it would be but why?

GM snyrco mesh F T W
Hondas oil works well too.

If you read you only need normal dino oil for these trannies, stunning if you ask me.

ya but i was MAD SYNTHETIC PWR YO! just kidding, but yeah i'm just wondering if its ok to run it in my car or not, cus the shifting on my car is clunky and jerky as hell, and maybe synthetic oil will make that a lil better, who knows.

user reports have sometimes shown that synthetic oil in the tranny is no good. some purport that its "too good" and doesnt allow the synchros to work properly. or whatever.

unanimously, honda MTF and GM/pennzoil synchromesh have had great feedback.

just use honda MTF. its made for your tranny.

and it died real quick.

dont know if it was the synthetic, but i think it was...it got really hard to shift, kinda odd

I recommend using HONDA MTF...

Synthetics and regular 10-30's / 10-40's will work but, I stick to my guns by recommending the OEM fluid. I have ran synthetics and Synchromesh for a while to test them out...but, nothing compares to OEM

Don't believe the HYPE.

I have a 91 Civic Hatch. My manual also states to use 10w30 motor oil. I've been using that in my manual tran. for thousands and thousands of miles w/no problems. Also had a 91 civic sedan w/5speed and used it in there w/no probs either.

How smooth do you guys's transmissions feel to shift? on mine it is very clunky, and sometimes difficult to throw between gears, so i've been recommended to change the oil, but are the trannys gonna feel this way even with a tranny oil change?

i had a honda tech tell me there is no use in spending money on honda MTF, when u can buy 10w30 for way cheaper..

i really think honda mtf is just motor oil.. ive used both and found no diff..

GM syncromesh is the cats *** though..

Your manual says to use 10w-30 because it was writen before Honda developed their MTF (mid 90's). You can't buy it anywhere but your local Honda or Acura dealerships. It's $3-$5 a quart depending on your local stealership markup, but its great stuff and I use it in all 3 of my Hondas...

Sounds like Honda was trying to cash in on some specialty fluid sales, much like Chrysler did w/their ATF4 in the caravans.

you guys use regular engine oil and save a buck before your tranny dies...

ill continue to use honda MTF, with the right ADDITIVES ie. (friction modifiers, and what not) made for a transmission. theres more to it than just engine oil.

umm ok.. my tranny has well over 300 000 on it and only regular motor oil has ever been in it.. so when is mine going to die? mtf is just motor oil just like any regular motor oil you can buy.. but you can keep thinking its different.

yea it's an old post, but wanted to clarify some info, older Hondas say to use motor oil in the manual transmission, this is because the honda MTF fluid superseded the spec later on, the honda fluid is not OIL, it has special friction modifiers that make the syncros work better in the tranny, this makes the transmission shift smoother, also newer motor oils dont have the zinc pressure additives older oils had, and no longer meet the original spec, you can also use the syncromesh, it has the same additives and you can buy it at the parts store

I think this is kind of stupid. It's what the manual says. Everyone seems to be die hard when it comes to following specs, until you get to transmission fluid. I have used motor oil and I don't have any issues with my transmission. I've also used MTF from the Honda dealership with success.

The special friction modifiers are all fine and dandy, now this thread is old as ***** and my car is dedicated to be flogged only, I still use GM sncryomesh because I have oodles handy from my old LSX cars.

If I was buying I'd throw normal in, as just said people are so stickliers on following what part goes where till they see trans fluid..
