Default clutch adjustment problems; might be aftermarket clutch?

Im adjusting my cable for a b16 tranny and the pedal free play has to be really high in order for me to get into gears( with the car on). If I try and add more pedal free play then it'll be too "loose" and won't let me go into any gear. With the cable adjusted tightly it'll let me into gears VUT if I take my foot like a cm off the clutch petal the car dies. Feels like I have to give it hellagas in order to keep it from dying. Like the rpms need to be at 3k for me to release the clutch petal. Is this because of some heavy aftermarket clutch kit?

Probably a cheap aftermarket 'stage clutch' with a really stiff pressure plate, and/or a lightweight flywheel..

You should be able to get used to the engagement. Hopefully sooner than later so you don't destroy it.

Or just put a stock clutch in it.

Hmm. So should I keep the petal free play really tight? I mean I keep stalling out feels like I'm learning how to drive stick for the first time Lol...

Having some free play should not make a difference.

It only affects where the engagement point is in the pedal throw. You only need to take up slack when the clutch wears to the pint where it won't fully disengage with the clutch pedal on the floor.

Likewise, because this is a cable clutch, you can actually bend the clutch fork or trash the pressure plate if you tighten it too much and press the pedal.

I had an aftermarket 'stage clutch' in a Honda when I was young and stupid, loaned the car to my brother, he went through the same WTF thoughts you're having, tightened the clutch cable like a moron, and bent my shift fork and trash the pressure plate.

Damn that sucks man.
Well I read thru a few old threads and came across a post that said to install the clutch cable thru the bracket first( with the bracket unbolted), then thru the arm, then bolt the bracket to the tranny. I did it and Idk but to me it looks like the arm is sitting perfect now. I'm going to test it out tomorrow and update this.

Well still have my problem. Clutch engages fully when the petal is all the to the floor. I played with my clutch settings to see where the car begins to die with it in gear. If in gear, with clutch petal to the floor, if I back off the clutch more than 2 inches, it begins to die. And I have to feed it a lot of gas , like rpms need to be above 3k when beginning to depress the clutch, because after that 2inch point, the rpms will drop very low, causing me to have to gas it harder. Could it be a new aftermarket clutch that just needs to be broken in?

That's normal.

You have a lightweight flywheel.

A lightweight flywheel is horrible for daily driving because of the characteristics you're experiencing.

The flywheel doesn't keep the momentum of the motor spinning when you release the clutch, because it lacks weight.

You have two options. Either adapt to the characteristics, or put a stock clutch and flywheel in your car.

Adjusting the cable will not help.

Dam... What's the point of a lighten flywheel if the motor setup is mainly stock?
It kinda sucks because I feel like the car will accelerate too fast in traffic.

You can also tear the bracket like I did back in the day...

Not pictured is my bent clutch pedal "pivot bar" on the pedal assembly LOL

The point is that people are morons and believe that there is some major performance advantage.

Lightened flywheel is good for maybe 1 or 2 hp on the top end.

Not worth it.

And a stock clutch is exponentially more reliable, longer lasting, and can actually hold quite a bit of torque over stock. Aftermarket stage clutches are designed to hold more torque, but at the cost of wearing extremely quickly, and not being as operator friendly.

All in all, it's really a downgrade to go aftermarket for anything in that area, unless you need it.

1 or 2 hp oh top... besides the point
It's the acceleration that you MAY gain with the addition of properly weighted parts for your application.
