This happen to me today on my 94 Accord. I want to get the correct part, and not glue the penny, because I do not want a metal penny to slam into the brake light switch. I would rather the crayony looking rubber plunger. I prefer spend the $3+ on a replacement plunger than damage the switch. Hopefully my local dealership will have it in stock.

I am so glad I found this post. Today this happened to me and after I looked at the floor board, there it was... broken pieces of plastic...

In the morning I'll go pick the piece up at Honda.

THANKS!!!!

Got the part, spent almost 20 minutes trying to put this thing in. The brake is so extremely tight that I cannot get this sucker in. I am 6'2 and put the seat all the way back into get my legs in the car and my head under the wheel and still there just is not room. I have no idea how they put these in there to replace when the distance from the plug to the pin is less than half of a inch.

I put the pedal pad for the clutch and used a nickel because it is much thicker than a penny for the brake. Here are the pictures.

Did you start the car? The car needs to be running, so that the 'power assisted' brake function can work. Lay on your back, looking up, with a flashlight positioned somewhere to give you light. Push the brakes in as hard as you can, and with your other finger, push up on the switch and slip it in place. When you get it in place, it will not go all the way through, so you just ease up off the brake, the switch will push it in the rest of the way. It is tricky, because you are only working with one hand. The other hand is being used to push the brake pedal down.

If this does not work for you, try having someone small sit in the seat and press the brake pedal hard with their foot, and you put your head down there and try to slip it in. This way, you have 2 hands to work with to get it in.

Worst case scenario, you can mark the position of the brake switch, screw it out, slip in the stopper, and screw back in the brake switch to the exact same position.

I want to thank the original poster of this threat: SS97.

When my brake lights stayed on yesterday, I went online and everything I found was "you have to replace the brake light switch", "There is something wrong with your brake system", or ""The problem is the pedal". I was almost convinced that this would costs me some money and time at the dealer.

Thank God, I kept on searching and found this page and this threat. It was an excellent idea to post this excellent pictures (Clear and closeup enough to detail). As soon as I saw the plastic pieces, I ran to my car and Voilá! I found exactly the same pieces, but in beige. Then I knew what my car problem was. I did a call to the dealer this morning and they have the part.

Once again this forum is a better place, for having this member SS97 on it. The original post is from some years ago, but Honda should include a mention to this issue in the manual.

After buying the part at the Honda dealer (Only $4.00), I came back to the forum for the instructions and pictures of where the small, but troublesome part belonged. Thanks again SS97 and the rest of the members. I reconnected the battery, then my BFF helped me with the brake pedal pressing, and immediately the hole was exposed. It took only a small pressure and the pad was in place and my brake lights went off. Problem solved! This Hoda-Tech.com forum is a blessing for us who are not mechanics. Had I taken my car to the dealer, I'm sure just for workmanship only the charged is around $100.00. ONce again Thank you, SS97!

Took me 5 minutes to fix.
I took a clip from Wheel well cover and cut the screw down and blamo it fixed it.

Now to fix the clutch one even though I'm not having any trouble of starting the car.

So there is suppose to be a stopper between the Brakelight switch and the pedal. I just put a Brakelight switch on today and my brake lamp switch is still on?

Wish I had known about you last night. The brake light got so hot that it started to melt the plastic housing. So I disconnected all five light bulbs. Should have used one of the temporary fixes instead. I found the same little parts shown in these photos on the floor of the car. Thanks for the help.

Yup. Ended up manually pressing the kill switch until I found something to fit it. Ended up with a left over plastic body pin. When the brake light pad broke off I rummaged the restaurant I work at till I found something to replace it.

Nice write up btw. PICTURES!

Have you tried adjusting the switch so that it is fully pressed when the pedal is errr...at rest. May be for the best since you said you replaced the switch

97SS, you have done an outstanding job with your write up! You possess the talent to write a manual better than those professional auto manuals writers do. Thank you so much in helping me and so many others. I am an Electrical Engineer, so I went in all the wrong directions thinking it was either a short, a stuck switch somewhere, or just a bad connection. I even topped off the brake fluid reservoir, just in case. I wouldn't have noticed it had I not gone out in the dark and seen the bright red lights. I logged in and saw your writeup. Wow, you are a savior. Honda dealership was closed. I went to Autozone and they suggested a fender/bumper retainer (see attahment). It was a perfect fit and is snug enough to not come out. I'll sleep well tonight. No battery-down problems tomorrow. Thanks a bunch, 97SS, for your effort in uploading all that info. You are what makes Honda-Tech Tick!!

FYI, there is also a plastic grommet on the clutch pedal that often breaks and makes it impossible to start your car. For that, and for this, I simply used a small round magnet. I read about it here as a temporary fix, but I've continued to use them as a permanent fix. The first couple of times, on the clutch switch, the magnet slid and I had to redo it. But once I got it centered correctly, it's worked for several months now.

Regarding the brake switch and grommet. Someone told me a few days ago that my backup lights didn't come on. When putting the magnet on the brake pedal for my tail lights tonight, I noticed another switch on the clutch pedal that seemed to be missing a grommet. I've put on a magnet to see if that's what controls the backup lights.

I see there's a recent post for the same problem with the clutch pedal.
I came out of Wal-Mart, attempted to start engine and got nothing. I thought it was a totally dead battery. Attempted a jump start, nothing. Got a push start and drove home. At home, happened to look at the floor mat and saw little pieces of brown rubbery plastic. Picked up the pieces and saw that the edges where round so thought it has to be a plug. Reached up around the clutch switch/pedal area and found the empty hole.
My fix- a small piece of formica and duct tape.

97SS,

Excellent write and photo log, thanks very much for the assist. I read your post and the first thing I did was check the floorboard. No real need to investigate further (though I did), because the small shards of material were lying right there. In regards to parts, my preference is OEM so I'll be contacting the Honda dealership after Memorial Day. My experience with workarounds is that they often times work back around to become a new problem. If I lived in BFE well, maybe, but Orlando isn't so bass-ackwards as all that...lol. Thanks again for taking the time to make such a remarkable post.
SscoootzZ

[edit]
Follow up - I got the part from the Honda dealership and it only cost $4 + change. Super simple to pop into place with my girlfriend pressing the brake pedal. Thanks again for the excellent post!

This was very helpful information. Found the blue crayon and was able to fix my 2000 Honda Oddesy. No dealer in our town so I used a bolt from the back of a door stop that goes on the hinge of a door. It has a little white pad on the end of it and it fit perfectly into the hole on the brake arm. Worked just fine.

1 Year later, now the one for my clutch has gone out. I saw cryon on my floor board, and was like 'wtf already?"... then I investigated and saw that its for the clutch this time.

Looked through this entire thread.

Here is the part number: 46505-SA5-000

But that's not my question. Among the blue crayon pieces on my floor was something else. It looks like a sleeve or collar. It's split in half. I don't know what it is or where it came from. Anyone?
