edit: I missed the part about being a sedan my comments below about the parts fitting refers to hatchbacks

My solution was to find good replacements from a junkyard. 88-89 will fit a 90-91 but you have to carefully trim off an inch or so with a Dremmel. When pulling them from a junked car be very careful not to bend them they must be perfectly straight or they will not clip on. You could also carefully remove the stuff that is pealing of and either polish the chrome or I have seen people polish the chrome to a dark gunmetal finish. Or as you say paint it black with automotive trim paint the problem being getting paint to adhere well to chrome.

if you take them off just scuff them with a red 3M scuff pad or high grit sandpaper (o'reillys carries the scuff pads you just have to ask for them) scuff or sand them until they are smooth to the touch and use some rattle can self-etching primer it is made for direct metal application then spray your black over that you can also use primer sealer over the etch primer then spray the black if you would like for a little extra adhesive assurance

thats a hell of a lot more work than i did. i went harbor freight bought a 10$ dremel with proper grit sanding bits. did what you think i did with it. went micheals crafts store bought a really nice paint brush with black acrylic paint and took my time doing it.

If you are unsure of how the trims will look with paint/don't want to worry about the paint going elsewhere than the trims, you could always sand them down and plastidip them. That way if you don't like the rubberized look, you can just peel it off.

AWESOME... Thank you.
I've got the same problem and been wondering the same. Except; how do I remove without bending the **** out of them?
