91 std no start after rotor screw fell out
Well my buddy steven has a 91 civic std stock d15b1 with an si cam & y8 cam gear, 96-2000 ex stock header, 2.5" cat back and stock cat, intake and mpfi swap using a 91 intake manifold. he picked up his dizzy and ecu from me and i had recently installed a new cap, rotor and ngk spark plugs on it. last night he was smashing around town and said that the car went like pop pop and died. so he left it parked on the side of the road, and steven and i went back to it today. i told him the screw probably came un done. so i pull the cap off, and what do you know, the rotor and screw just falls out. so we re install the screw and rotor, then the cap, and we go to start it aaaaand nothing. just cranks. once in a while it would pop from the intake. so i check for spark, and it's getting spark, it's yellow, instead of blue, so i replaced the coil with a known good one and still no start. so we replace the main relay with a known good one, even though his was new and good since he recently replaced it with a brand new car quest one. so then we notice that we can't hear the fuel pump priming, so i check for codes, and he's throwing a code 20, but he tells me he's been throwing that four about two weeks. so we check all the fuses, all of them are good, and now we're stumped. i also checked the timing, and it's good too. i also placed my ear to the air filter, and had him turn the key to #2 from off while holding the car at WOT and didn't hear the injectors firing
so, highlights are:
Rotor screw came un done while driving, but it was fixed
has spark
has air
cranks but doesn't start
mechanical timing is set dead on
main relay clicks
fuel injectors don't make noise, nor does the fuel pump
has gas, but i do not believe it is reaching the combustion chamber
throwing a code 20, but has been for two weeks and car ran fine up until last night
did not try another dizzy since we did not have annother obd0 mpfi dizzy available.
would our problem be dizzy related? or fuel pump related? this is his DD so we need to get it fixed ASAP
thanks for the help!!

yes. all fuses were checked and checked out good. would the rotor coming un done fry something in the dizzy to make it not want to start?

Re: 91 std no start after rotor screw fell out
Timings really advanced if it's popping out the IM. It's igniting before the valve closes. Theres a possibility that the rotor or screw could have effected the CYP, TDC, or CAS sensor...but none of those have anything to do with you're fuel delivery going haywire.
Get a rag and crack open the fuel line to the intake manifold. My fuel pump only primes once until it maximizes pressure....But seriously cover that bitch with the rag when/if you do.

Accord Civic CRV CRX Del Sol Odyssey Prelude
90-98 88-98 97-98 88-91 93-97 95-98 92-98 Electrical Load Detector
defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
The CAS is basically the spark advance...which would explain the advanced timing...
Definitely sounds dizzy related.
But still, wtf fuel pump? haha

no it shouldn't?
your just not getting gas anymore
you think your friend ripped a gas pump wire or something
making it so the pump doesn't turn on?
check the power going to the pump to make sure it's getting some

Re: 91 std no start after rotor screw fell out
aite well i'll have to poke around at it some more tomorrow perhaps. i just thought it was odd that his fuel pump would stop working at the same time the rotor came off, although he does run his tank really low on gas alot, so i guess it could be coincidence that the pump died? idk thanks for the ideas guys. his buddy has a crx si, so we might be able to try that.. i keep this thread updated with status.

Don't know if this may help any, but take a look at the ignitor in the distributor. Little square with three prongs i believe on it. I had a 88dx that quit on me one day going to work, turns out that the screw holding the rotor worked its way out and went into the ignitor. replaced it with a spare i had laying around and put some locktite on the screw and all was fine.
