Default 91 CRX sound proofing materials.....help please

Well the rear of my car has no interior because i am reupholstering the cargo cover and divider. The car is really noisy on the highway so i figured before reinstalling the interior i would sound proof it.

Dynomat is very expensive stuff and i need alot to do the whole rear of the CRX
Is there another material you guys used that works well to help deaden some of this dreaded noise??

Peal N Seal can be found at most Home Depots / Lowes. Its a roofing insulation product that usually comes in 6" x 12' rolls (or something like that) for around $20-30. Its almost identical to Dynomat however it is much thinner. It is self adhesive and usually holds up well unless your car gets to 110+ 90% humidity inside, then it peels off. But if your only putting it on the bottom and not vertically or upside down I see no problem.

Just get brown bread, cheaper than dynocrap, doesnt peel off no matter if its hot or humid, and leaves that shiny bling look to it!!! It has a aluminun foil on one side and like a tar on the other. Don't cheap out and buy some garbage that your gonna end up scrape off because of bubbling and peeling or rotting away in the future.

Im thinking about doing this too,

But how hard would it be to remove it in the future? How much does it weigh too?

I'd see how much all that crap weighs before I installed it. I see no point in doing it if your adding more then 30lbs to the car.

You can actually fill your rear quarter panels and rocker panels with "great stuff" insulation foam, takes about 1 can per quarter panel and costs about $6.00 per can. its a closed cell foam so water can't penetrate it. Take off your rear inner panels, clean then fill the area, leave openings for expansion, let it come out all the openings. It will bubble out of all openings a lot so let it dry for at least 24 hours then come back and cut off the excess with a hacksaw blade. This will get rid of the majority of sound in a crx which resonates from the rear wheel arches. doing this along with your rocker panels will also increase structural ridgidity, its popular with autox'ers. Also a lot of newer luxury cars have this done from the factory new Acura MDX's, infinity's etc. Serious racers use two part expansion foam that they can get in denser versions for more ridgidity but the "great stuff" requires no special tools just point and fill. You could always line your inner quarters with an adhesive backed sound deadener, then fill the area for an enhanced effect but the foam alone is amazing... I've also used great stuff to make removeable inner fender pieces that are molded to the shape to fill the gap from your fender linder to the inside of your fender to the inner railand close the gap you see between your body and fender when you open your door. If you want to make these peices you have to cover all the area that the foam will touch with masking tape, then wax the tape heavily with "part-all" mold release wax (you have to go to a fiberglass shop to find that stuff).

I know this is an old post. But there is new products available to control sound in your Honda.

One company called Audimute makes a material that is light weight and works excellent. I have installed it in my CRX and it is every bit as quiet as my 2012 Lincoln since installing it.

It is not real expensive either. You do have to use spray adhesive to install it in your car but it is still way less expensive than some of the other materials.

I highly recommend Audimute. Google it as they have a web site where you can order it.

Best way is a combination of dynamat/lizard skin, foam carpet padding, & carpeting. You have to find a happy medium between weight and how much you want to sound deaden.

*Foam carpet padding comes in many thicknesses and densities and is extremely light. It can be found at any home depot/lowes.

*You can fill any negative spaces in the chassis with foam (like the rear querter panels).

For the doors, I used a combination of dynamat on the inside of the outer door skin and another layer on the inner door skin. Then I traced the shape of the door panel and sandwiched a layer of foam padding between the door and the door panel and it made a big improvement.

You could try reflectix. I used it on a bunch of street rods to quiet down road and engine noise. You can get it at home depot and a $50 roll will do your whole car. Pick up a couple cans of spray glue and go to town. If it worked for deadening the sound of a big block in a 1940 Ford it will work in your Honda. If you want to take it out all you have to do is peal it up. Probably the cheapest and lightest way you can go. I'm planning on using it in my 90 civic and my 90 crx.

I recommend Audimute Corporation material. I recently sound proofed my 91 CRX HF and it is like driving a Lexus now. No rattles and very quiet. The stuff I used from them is called "Peacemaker" and it is relatively inexpensive as compared to Dynamat. They sell all different sizes and thicknesses. I recommend the 2 MM thickness as it can be doubled in areas it needs to and thin enough to be in tight areas. It is the stuff that professional musicians are now using to build sound proof rooms.

The roofing stuff you get at Home Depot is an asphalt based material that will smell when the interior heats up. I have heard from professional detailers that they often see home brewed sound insulation using Home Depot roof material de-laminate after a while being exposed to heat and cold. I've used that in the past and will never go back to it. You can cheap out on sound proofing but you get what you pay for.

The Audimute material is $60 for a 2 foot by 25 foot roll. You will need two rolls to do a CRX correctly. You can lay it flat with no adhesive or on doors and side panels I use 3M Rubber & Vinyl 80 spray adhesive to stick it down. That you can get at Home Depot for about $15 a can. Used 4 cans. I did my back end, the doors and the complete floor with about a half roll left over. NOT recommended for under the hood. The foil backed stuff is good for that.

I also like the idea of not having to stuff insulation in the back wheel well area. The Audimute stuff can just cover over the openings and make for a nice quiet ride. No water worries as it is made from rubber and bonding agents. Stuffing foam or fiberglass in the back areas invites water problems. That stuff will absorb any water including humidity and possibly cause rust problems in the future.

My Rex now is really quiet and it is amazing how a quiet car makes for a less tired driver.
I put tons of miles on my cars and this stuff really works well.
