Default tonekids 89 CRX Si restoration (Build)

Hi everyone. For some inexplicable reason, I bought a very rusty 1989 CRX Si from a guy in Indiana.

There's something catastrophically wrong with the bottom end of the engine. There are some shrapnel wounds in the oil pan, but the block appears to be intact from the front. I'll know more once the engine is out on the stand.

The interior is in pretty good shape. A rip in the driver's seat, wonky seat belts, and a non-functioning gauge backlight are the major problems.

I'm currently removing the last of the wiring harness. Next step is transmission linkages and axles, and it's time to hoist.

My plan is to restore it to original, as best I can.

This forum has been very useful to me and I appreciate all of the advise and knowledge that you all have.

Cheers!

Paul

Post your restoration pictures here rather than posting an external link.

OK, sorry. Didn't know it was against the rules to link to my blog.

It is difficult to keep multiple threads of blogging and picture posting going on at the same time. Right now I've got most of the transmission disconnected, just cracked the rubber boot over the roll pin and am trying to get that out so I can pull this engine.

Maybe I'll get the axles pulled tomorrow, depending on how good of a job the PB Blaster has done this week :-)

Howdy folks,

So Monday evening, I pulled the D16A6 out. It took forever to get to this point because I have no idea what I'm doing.

It went really smoothly, except that I improvised a bit with the engine mounts, and failed to fully comprehend the shop manual. The "front" transmission mount has a lower bolt that I found impossible to remove, and I had a brain fart and didn't realize that there was a "mount nut" under the passenger side mount.

I started hoisting it and had to jockey it around a bit. Lowered it below normal position and got the front mount out. Then I realized the passenger side mount was going to prevent me from moving the engine enough to work it free. Much time was spent on that frozen 17mm "mount nut", but I finally broke it free.

The only problem I might now have is that I had to bend the A/C lines to get the engine out because I didn't have it tilted enough. I might have tweaked the hard line going to the right top of the condenser. The guy who sold it to me said it had a new condenser but had a leak somewhere. It's an R-12 system but I plan on converting to R-134a. The A/C is absolute last on my list, so I'm not too concerned.
  • Now that the engine is out, I need to decide how to proceed with rebuild or replace.
  • I need to treat some rust on the subframe
  • Probably want to remove more stuff from the engine bay
  • Massive degreasing and cleaning of the engine bay due to the oil and grease everywhere
  • Rust prevention and painting of the engine bay
  • Rust treatment and repaint/coat of all of the front chassis parts

And that's before taking on the body rust, stopping/slowing it and repairing the badly rusted areas with new metal.

The interior is in pretty good shape, all of the ***** and lights work, but the parking brake is not working. The driver's seat also has a giant tear in it, which we're going to fix. My lovely wife will assist me.

It was my first engine lift, and it seems to be one of those things that you don't know what you're doing wrong until you try it.

But the engine is out and sitting on the ground. Tonight I'd like to get the hood back on and roll the car outside and get the engine on the stand so I can start taking it apart.

I will say that forums like this one have been extremely helpful, and I wouldn't have ever even thought about doing this without them

Ohh, here's a "general picture" of the car.

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. The Honda banner was an awesome gift sent by a friend's husband who heard I've been working on an old Honda. That's some serious bling.
