Default 88 CRX Evaporator / Freon question

Working on getting my AC back to 100%. I plan to install a new evaporator, but was concerned about freon leakage. I've been told my system leaked all the freon. Is it a problem at this point for me to change the evaporator or do I need to take it to a shop to have them take "more" freon out possibly?

My question is, can I just remove and replace the evaporator myself and then take it to a shop to get it recharged? When I disconnect the evaporator, am I going to kill every human in a three block radius?

Yes. Also replace the receiver/dryer just before you have it evacuated, leak tested, and recharged with R12 and oil
