Default ** Official B-Series Civic Wagon 4WD Info **

I have a complete OBD-0 B16 swap & HASport mounts laying around (from a previous project) just burning a hole in my garage. I recently just found an 89 Civic 4WD 5spd, and i have a hankerin' to buy a CRV 5spd tranny!!!

Ok, it's now 6:00am where i live, and, after countless hours searching Honda-Tech, this is what ive found:

Also, a little about the "super low" SL gear:

The 1985 4WD Wagons had a button to engage 4WD. The 1986-87 had a full time viscous coupling. Both with a solid rear axle and the 1.5l carbureted engine.

The 1988-91 Wagons had the same viscous coupling, but with independent rear suspension. And the 1.6l CRX Si engine.

It's just like an extra low 1st gear, still part of the main shifter. You can only start off in that gear, you can't and wouldn't want to downshift to it while moving. You just shift over to the far left and up. But about the gear, it's really low almost like reverse. The tranny is cable actuated, the shifter setup is almost identical to an H22.

Here's some good Wagon info i found too:
ALL THE INFO YOU'LL EVER NEED ON ANYTHING
How rt4WD works
CRX w/ GSR turbo AWD hybrid (not wagon, but interesting)
Civic Wagon colors (colors they came)
Honda Civic wagon forum
Civic Wagon 4wd: swap a B18 and keep 4wd?
Factory AWD Integra Info (yeah, Honda made one)
AWD Integra Specs

So, all in all, here is my conclusion:

A B-series swap into a Civic rt4WD wagon while retaining 4WD IS possible. However, it is by no means a direct swap/ bolt in affair (or at least not yet, untill somebody makes some conversion pieces ). This is due to the fact that to retain the AWD setup in the wagon, you have to use the stock Wagon tranny. You cannot simply swap in a B-series with a CRV tranny and keep AWD due to differences in the AWD drive train componenets between the CRV and the Civic rt4WD. To do this you would have to use the CRV AWD setup, and integrate that into the Civic Wagon. So, you might as well spend all your time and $$ on integrating the CRV AWD system into a car "more worthy" than the Civic 4WD Wagon. Similar to what Honda-Tuning did, with their Project AWD DC2 Integra (Issues: June 2003, Oct 2003, Feb 2004, Aug 2004).

For now, the closest thing we will get to a B-series 4WD Civic wagon is to swap in the DOHC ZC.

PLEASE CHIME IN!! I WANT YOUR 2 CENTS!

that idea has been creepin around h-t for awhile now. When you think about it everything cost money the first time it was done. If you have the tools and patience, Id say go for it. The first AWD EF. Youll catch traction and be lightweight. Don't forget the weakness of those trannys.

The Civic Wagon rt4WD is an AWD EF. There's a guy in Canada that has converted a CRX to AWD w/ a Gsr turbo swap.
