winter tire sizing
time for me to buy new winter tires to replace the ones currently on my 14" steelies.. quick question about winter tire sizing for 99 civic Si.
Stock size 195/55/15
Recommended size 185/65/14 (what I use now - Michelin Arctic Alpin)
alternates (?) 195/60/14 ~ -1.2%change
195/65/14 ~ +2.2%change
I know that tall and skinny is the best to go through snow, but there hasn't been much snow where I've moved (but I'll still be getting winter tires). I'm leaning more towards the 195/65/14 as it still fits the tall requirement, but i've got a wider 195 as opposed to 185 in the dry. The 195/65 will also lower my mileage correct?
FYI: Buy michelin tires before tomorrow and you can send in for a free JVC dvd from michelin..

no tips?? or is it too early in the season.. Also, JVC dvd deal is over, however I've been told there there will be a save $60 off a set of 4 special beginning next week running through october..

Re: winter tire sizing (sil)
for snow, you want the thinnest tallest tire. i used 185/65-14 blizzaks on the wife's 99 si with no problems. it was a little mushy on dry roads, but then again, you must remember i had a SNOW tire on the car. if you go wider, all you do is reduce the amount of traction in the snow. sidenote: years back on my 84 civic hatch (1.3L, 4 speed) i had 155/80-13's on it, and it was unstoppable in the snow. no hp + wide ratio trans + little 13's = lotsa go in the snow!

why is it otherwise in the winter?</TD></TR></TABLE>
The thinner tire will "cut" through the snow/slush/crap that's on the surface, and ride on the street. A wider tire will stay on top of the snow, which is much more dynamic/unpredictable than the street.
