Will GM Syncromesh fix my 3rd gear grind?
I've heard about this gm syncromesh and that it does "wonders". Does it really?
Well my tranny has been acting up on me lately. Slightly grinding into 3rd...I thought it was the tranny fluid, changed it from Honda MTF to some regular thick valvoline gear oil. Even made it worst. Went with 10w30 with a mix of the Lucas crap. And it sure made a world of a difference. But still...sometimes it grinds...
What are your opinions about GM?

The Honda MTF is really awesome stuff. I have heard the GM syncromesh has fixed grinding problems in the past, but I think its really hit and miss. I would tell you to fix the damaged synchro the right way and replace it. Then stick with Honda MTF and change it at the regular intervals like you should.

Honda MTF is just as good, and is much cheaper... It will fix a slight grind but it will be a temporary fix. It will not alleviate the problem all together though.

I used synchromesh, and I advise against it.
It does eliminate the grind, but it hesitates before you shift into gear, making your car slower. I like the way honda MTF shifts much better.

I love Honda MTF as well. My tranny has 254,000miles on it and it used to grind really bad in second and thrid. I put in MTF about 3000miles ago and thus far it's pretty much gotten rid of all the grinds under normal driving conditions.
Just remember, MTF will help, but it's a bandaid that'll temporarily fix the problem.

i have been using honda mtf, and yes i do agree that is does indeed shift VERY nice for the first few days. But somehow after using it for a while...my **** is grinding like crazy. Plus when I drained the Honda MTF for some reason...it came out cloudy and thin instead of how it looked like 10,000 miles ago.

just get the es inserts for 20 bucks, or some jimfabs for 100. better yet just fill them all up with window weld for almost nothing.

thats the spirit i didn't mean to sound all anti-syncromesh (even though i am)- so by all means use it if you want a cheap, quick fix. well, it's not a fix...it's more like a "cover-up" and a temporary one at that.
but lucky you for being close to HMO. I live in SD, and i hate having to drive up there.

yeah...usually people don't buy trannies piece by piece...

depends on how bad or worn your synchros/gears are...like what was said before, gm=bandaid.
It kinda cured my 3rd gear grind on high rpms, but don't get your hopes up that it'll do "wonders"
