Default Speed Sensor or Gauge Cluster?

soo my speedometer doesn't work. It doesn't stay on zero while I'm driving. it goes backwords and hangs below the zero. LoL (what is life) everything on my dash works. temp gauge, rpm, every lights work. occasionally, my speedometer works normal. meaning, it just happens by luck. I don't know if it's my speed sensor that needs to be replaced, or my whole gauge cluster?

Mine is the same bad cluster. If i smack mine it flips back over. You can pop the front off the cluster with the cluster out of the car and flip it back over

If you're needle is upside down..ie under the stop peg you need to flip it over. Most likely cause is a bad cluster.

Do you have a cel on?

Bad speedometer.

Post car information. It's required to have a thread.

Code 43 isn't thrown by bad cat. There is another problem.

If its a 92-95 Civic, its most likely the circuit card mounted to the back of the spedometer gauge. My spedometer started freaking out, showing I was going 80-90 mph, when I was going 40 50, or whatever random number it didnt like. Occasionally it went to the other side of the peg, but would fix it self. The card can be swapped for another one from a different cluster, but usually its a bad solder joint on the card and someone who knows what they are looking for can fix it. There was a thread about a while back with someone in NC who was able to fix them.

Default Just switched my speedometer?

Alright, I had a broken speedometer. Today, I had the factory instrument cluster (with the automatic beside the temp gauge) still in my shed. The gauge I had before I switched was 200+ miles, the factory only had 145k. I DIDN'T RESET OR ROLL BACK THE MILEAGE. I switched it because of the speedometer. Now my speedometer works. I also have a swapped engine with unknown miles. Is it illegal to do that? I live in Virginia.

I don't know your laws, ask the dmv.

Take a sticker put your mileage on the sticker, date it, put miles of new cluster on sticker. Now in future take mileage change from new cluster and add to old number...Walla correct mileage

Depending on how your state records mileage (my state stops recording after vehicle is 10 years old), you may get a mileage discrepency that shows up the next time you register the car. You'll undoubtedly get an odometer discrepency in Carfax. Technically you're supposed to report the discrepency yourself to the DMV, but nobody ever does.

Default Why won't my speedometer work?

Alright man getting a little frustrated. i recently replaced my speedometer from another gauge cluster. it worked for 2-3 days, but all of a sudden, it stopped working. before, just my speedometer didn't work. my odometer worked fine. but when i replaced it, both my speedometer and odometer won't work. meaning the miles won't go up. what is this? when i was driving, i hit the top of my dash and the speedometer needle was going up and down like there's a party in there.

Would you be kind enough to tell us what car you have?

I doubt the wiring diagrams are the same between all the cars out there you could be discussing.

Even just in the 92-00 civic/del sol they could be different.

Sounds like you got a bad cluster.

Or did you take apart the cluster at any point?

Get a small 25 watt soldering iron, heat up all the solder points on the back of the speedometer head until the solder starts to melt and flow again. That usually fixes them.

You can trick the CEL by using the double spark plug defouler setup:

Not relevant to code 43. OBD1 Civics don't monitor the cat in part because they don't have a secondary O2 sensor.

ive had the same thing happen twice now... this most recent time( within the last few weeks) my mileage was being counted still, so I knew it wasn't the VSS... I bought a speedo gauge and swapped it out yesterday, and everything is good again! Not sure on the legality of changing the mileage, but I did set the new one I got to the mileage of my old speedo gauge... was pretty easy to do... was actually thinking of posting a video of how to change the mileage, but I now something like that can be used for the wrong reasons...
