Ever since I've bought my Civic, I've noticed that there is this "whump-whump-whump-whump-whump" sort of dull thudding noise that gets faster or slower depending on whether I'm going faster or slower. This correlation makes me think it might be something having to do with the wheels or tires. At highway speeds you can barely discern it since you're going so fast the sound just blends into itself, but if I'm breaking hard from 30 mph, I can really hear the "whump-whump-whump" sound.

Any idea what this could be?

you could have a belt shift in one of the tires, i don't think it could be a brake problem because you would get a pulsation in the peddle or wheel when you slowed down at high speeds.

Exactly. A "wump" at low speeds that increases with speed is usually a tire that has shifted a belt or has a flatspot from a lockup. A bent rim usually doen't show up until you build up speed and it's only a vibration. Best bet is to go to a shop that has a balancer that does a runout and road variance test and can detect imperfections in the tire itself. Sometimes you can rotate the tire to the rear and lower the noise but the tire needs to be replaced.

I agree. Could it possibly be a wheel bearing?

They usually cause a roaring roise that gets loud or quiet when you turn. If it's lost a bearing for some reason it could cause a thump noise. The wheel and hub should move quite a bit if you had it up in the air if that was the case. You can try moving the tires front to back and see if the noise moves also.

May be that one or more of your tires is going bad. My friends' tire had a tittie or bulge in the tire and it cause a sound similar to what you are discribing, also, it was a tad bumpy even on smooth roads.

I also get this noise when driving on the motorway or slowing down to around 15mhp, is it something to do with noisy tyres or my rims are already bent? If the rims not seriously bent, will a balance sort things out?

I don't get any steering wheel vibration nor do I get vibration on the brake pedal.

I'm guessing that I need to go get my tires checked out and/or replaced then. I haven't rotated the tires because I only bought this vehicle (used) two weeks ago.

Just noticed on the way to work this morning, when I brake hard from a fast speed, I do get steering wheel vibration. Does that affect the diagnosis?

I'm gonna go ahead and throw out the good'ol CV joint cause. I know that my CV joint has been fuxed since christmas, and it makes a THUD THUD sound that goes faster and slower depending on how fast I am going. Could be the axle, but could very likely be the rotar.. Why don't you just take your wheel off and examine the rotar and axle. Look for grease on and around the axle.

Warped rotors and possibly need an alignment.

I'll probably wind up doing that. I just needed a starting point.

I don't think it's a CV joint because I'd hear a clicking noise whenever I'd make a turn.
