Default Wheel Bearing Question

I just had both front wheel bearings replaced on my Civic. My question is what causes the wheel bearings to go bad and need to be replaced?

Natural wear and tear over time, also if dirt or any other debris gets in there it can cause it to wear out fast.

How much did it run you to have them done, I may be replacing mine soon and just wondering about how much it cost.

Jesus Christ. I can get 2 OEM bearings (both sides) and have them pressed out and pressed in with everything done themselves for $260. $160 for 2 OEM bearings and $100 for labor. Thank god Texas is cheap.

God dam, all of you guys got ripped off. I paid $125 parts/labor included to do my wheel bearings. thank god for good ol' southern california car culture

I personally would rather do it my self if I only could afford the press machine to press out the bearings.

Guys,
I am in the same boat, Got a Honda Civic 97 with 96k miles and there is a houling sound from both front wheels. I guess i need to get em replaced. I was researching and Napa guys are charging $30 for bearing replacement if i get the hub assembly to them. I was planning to do it myself and get the bearings done by Napa.

How big is it a deal to do this. Is it worth doing it myself.

Thanks.

Holy ****... 600 bucks? You got jewed. Hell, spend the money on the bearings and put them in yourself... for 600 bucks you could buy a bearing puller.

OK I may be a little tired (working 3rd shift) but if you are bringing them to NAPA, are you bringing them the whole knuckle? Also, if you remove the knuckle wont you possibly mess up the alignment?

For that much you should have swapped for Integra knuckles and saved hundreds. Bigger brakes, and if you get them from a 2000 they're probably in great shape.
