Default What are your opinions on honda brand fluid vs "name brand"?

I was wondering what everyones opinios were regarding the 'quality' and whatever else u might say, ofhonda fluids at the dealer and the fluids u can get a t an auto parts store. when i got my civic (with 86000 miles) a few months ago, i replaced all the fluids in the car(the brakes, radiator, power steering...) with honda brand from the dealer. Is honda brand really that much better for honda cars than the name brand stuff u can get at the parts store?

as far as p/s fluid, i know that honda uses a different type fluid than others, but you can get honda type fluid at auto parts stores. as far as quality of dealer purchased stuff, yea its gonna be better for your car because honda researches both the fluid and whatever your putting it in.

prolly just the same fluid with a diff sticker on the bottle. as long as the ratings are the same it doesnt matter. IE brake fluid. honda DOT3 is jsut as good as anything else DOT3

however if u want to go better, u can always buy autozone stuff that says exeeds dot 3 and dot 4 for example

honda motor oil = Mobil...

I'd say some things make a difference (tranny fluid) but most won't as long as it's to specs of what it needs...

for replacement parts for your car, always go with Honda.

For fluids, ya gotta do some homework. Some things in your car were sacrificed for cost reasons. Hondas last forever cause they got it where it counts. Replace your wheel bearing, get a OEM Honda one. But for brake pads, id reccomend a GOOD aftermarket, like aem/nissin (nissin makes your calipers). Id use Honda p/s fluid anytime. For any non-raced Honda, use OEM brake fluid. For the tranny, OEM is GREAT, although some may be a little better, like GM synchromesh. For oil, dont use Honda's stuff, go with a better choice, like a synthetic. Honda's is a natural, and is cheaper. Oil filter, go with somethin like amsoil, cause Honda's filters suck, we all know that. coolant is somethin that on a street car isnt gonna make a difference, ESPECIALLY stock, so any brand of coolant will do just fine, there pretty much all very similar, so get some at a gas station, but if you tear a radiator hose workin on the car, go to Honda for that hose and clamp. Its all about doin research. Some aftermarket is ****, some is better than OEM. coolant, go generic. oil, get quality. timing belt, radiator hoses, belts, cam seals, go OEM. Does anyone get what im sayin?

P.S. Amsoil motor oil over Mobil1 synthetic, hands down. Ive run both, amsoil is MUCH better. Period. Amsoil is a REAL synthetic just like royal purple.

I agree with everything except these two points.

Honda Coolant is specifically designed for aluminum engines. Coolant is alot of chemicals and over time they react differently. Use only a non-silicate coolant in a Honda engine. Its just easier to buy premixed Honda coolant. They use de-ionized water because tap water can corrode.

Mobil 1 is a fully synthetic oil. From http://www.mobiloil.com FAQ section:

Q. Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?
A. Yes, it is.

Im curious. What did you find better about Amsoil over Mobil 1? Did you have oil analysis done on the two?

I can tell you that just because the dealership sell Honda fluids doesnt mean they use it. I know for a fact, at Williams Honda in Hampton Va, we used Kendall oil (oil changes). Unless a customer specified we didnt use it....

Mobil DOES NOT MAKE OIL FOR HONDA... Honda OEM oil is produced by the factory IDEMITSU... And that is for sure cos I had 4 quarts of OEM Honda 10w40 semi synthetic oil in my hands... and it is produced by IDEMITSU

The only non-honda oem fluids I've used are the motor oil and coolant.
