rust underneath and especially around the wheel wells in the back...and just rust anywhere. When u drive if, it the gears grind (like if u'd shift if the clutch wasnt in) and smoke coming out of the exhaust, or any smells in the exhaust fumes that doesnt belong there. I cant think of anything else but thats proly just the surface of things.

Definitely this stuff. Look closely behind the rear wheel wells for rust, as almost all EGs have at least a bit (even if they don't look like it on the outside). To be honest, there really isn't much that's a common problem on civics. I know it sounds biased, but they're really solidly built cars. Also the fan on most EGs bites the dust after a while, but its usually just the relay. And the main relay under the dash eventually needs to be resoldered or replaced most of the time. Those two are really minor fixes though. If you find a car you're interested in call a dealership with the vin # and check for any recalls if you want. You might be able to get some free work done!

yea get the vin# and do a search for "carfax" on this forum. if u're lucky, you'll find someone who's offering free carfax reports. with a carfax, you'll be able to find out if the car was in an accident, number of different owners, the odomoter readings. you could also check out carbuyingtips.com . good luck with your purchase

DENTS ARE EVIL! theres this little spot on your block, near your clutch, that has letters embosed into the metal that reads something like "d16xx,b16xx,b18xx" make sure it doesn't have 15 lol oo and if it says "vtec" on the top. *standing olvation* you've got a swEEt ride.

Engine is the least of my worries right now because in the summer i am looking to do a k20a or h22 series swap. Then i will give that standup applause. Lol. Thnaks for all the advice. Will definetally check everything mentioned out when i get it. Any more? O and on a side note, is it possible and how much in a ballpark figure would it be to redo and interior. Carpet, headliner, seats etc. Allt he stuff that gets old looking basically. Thnaks

look at the fitment of lights/bumpers/fenders etc. usally after a crash they arent as str8 as they should be. carfax is good but it wont always give you the history of what happened to the car.

Oh yeah, forgot about that carfax stuff. They only show what has been reported to them. Which means that if an accident is settled outside of insurance (probably 25% of all accidents I've heard of) they don't know about it. Look at the gaps around the front fenders, bumper cover, and hood. They should all be identical; Honda has a special too they use to set the gap at the factory so they're VERY acurate with that stuff. Also look inside the engine bay for any welds that aren't robotic and stuff of that nature. Even good repair jobs leave behind a few clues.

have someone check the axles and axle boots. this is a semi-common Honda problem (there arent many, but this is one of the few.)

Re: What to look out for when buying a used civic. (rcjustin)
I forgot some stuff to look out for. Some common problems with civics are:
-altezza taillights
-fartcan exhaust
-lowering springs w/ stock blown shocks
-clear corners
-car value < stereo value
-little blue leds in the taillights
-ebay intake
-huge wheels w/ dinky drum brakes
My car had all of these symptoms when I bought it but they've since been remedied.

hah tru dat homie. Rust just eats the hell out of these cars, so check for rust and just good running condition.

one good thing would be to get a compretion tester from like an auto store and check it to see if its in spec, also see if the timming has been advanced, oil around the edges of the valve cover.
