Default checking engine codes but getting Solid constant CEL... DEAD ECU?

I jumped the two pin connection with a solid copper wire. I get constant cel no blink nothing. as soon as i unplug it goes back to normal no cel. Is this a dead ecu or a no problem ecu. I wouldnt be suprised if its dead ecu cuz i get 18mpg city.

Would the car still drive with a dead ecu....any other way to verifiy

Are you doing this with the car started and on?

You should jump the wire with the car off, then turn the key to the run position, but do not start it. Then it will flash the codes, if you have any.

Well then.... whats the car doing? Do you get a light while your driving and then when you jump it its still solid, then thats a bad ecu. If you have no codes and you jump it and get a solid then you have no codes.

Thats not what i have been reading. I have no codes when driving, but my a/f are whack and i dont know what else it would be. I run so rich you can barely breathe inside the car from emissions. Plus i get 18mpg city 34mpg hw

"Solid Check Engine Light
If the CEL is lit solid and does not blink (after jumping the service check connector on OBD1 ) and the car runs poorly the following could be the problem:

* A faulty ECU (means any other component failure other than listed here)
* Poor soldering connections
* Check Sum error
* Faulty program stored in the ROM
* Faulty ROM chip
* Faulty 74HC373 chip"

From http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/CEL

Why does that say the exact opposite of what you said.

Do you have a wideband or are you looking at the light show a/f gauge?

How does the car run? If its driving fine then you have no problems. If its running like crap then its a bad ecu. Not that hard to tell when an ecu is bad. Try another one and see how it goes.

I have no af gauge. I just know they are wack because i get 200 miles to a 9 gallon tank.

The car drives fast as hell. However, it sputters at complete random when taking off off the line. Only about 2-4 sputters, and only when taking off off the line.
