Default What does a good/bad o2 sensor look like?

I'm trying to sell an old o2 sensor, but I don't know if it still has a lot of life left. The car ran good except for a slight stumble 2-3k rpm, though my gas milage slowly got worse. I don't think the first is related to the o2 sensor but I don't know about the gas milage thing. The sensor had very little carbon buildup on it. I just wiped it off with a tissue. It is darkened a little from use. I don't know if this is a good comparison but it does not look like a fouled plug. I don't have a digi cam so I can't take a pic of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clean it with a propane torch and re-use. worth a try...

they clean themselves if it's heated.

So there is nothing you can see to tell if it's bad? Can you only tell by performance?

Mine looks a little darker than that, but not nearly as much build up on the bottom.

well basically what he is asking is, what are the syntoms/signs of a bad o2 sensor. How does the car run/act, would it cause his car to stutter between 2-3k, sound familiar to anybody? Im interested to know as well...

An additional consequence of any oxygen sensor failure may be damage to the catalytic converter. A rich operating condition causes the converter to run hotter than normal. If the converter gets hot enough, the catalyst substrate inside may actually melt forming a partial or complete blockage. The result can be a drastic drop in highway performance or stalling because of a buildup of backpressure in the exhaust system</TD></TR></TABLE>

hey that looks exactally like a good o2 sensor

there is nothing on the outside of the sensor that will give it away that its bad.

There is no way to tell its bad by looks, you have to test it. Use a DC voltmeter. any O2 sensor that generates 0.9 volts or more (when its heated) is good. It doesn't matter what it looks like.

So as long as it's not throwing any codes, it's good?

actually no, ive seen o2 sensors that are going bad and have all the signs of a bad o2 sensor (bad gas mileage, really rich) but no CEL.

it sucks, i hate o2 sensors.

3 ways to tell if you have a bad O2 sensor.
1)Running real rich or lean, go check your ecu might be throwing a code!
2)Hesitation in any RPM excluding your inability to control the clutch
3)Really Bad Gas Mileage
Go try Bosch, they are cheap and get the universal sensor without the plug.
It's cheaper and works the same!
