It detects vibrations in the motor (caused by detonation), and retards your timing when it finds some. Its a safety feature for your motor's health.

Hit the hammer on the nail. Perfect answer.

quick hijack question: if I chip my ECU, causing it the disable knock sensor codes, speed govervor, etc. will the knock sensor still function?

Only if you plan on using it. If you disable it, it won't matter.

I'm missing what you're getting at - you asked if you disabled the KS, would it still work. Well it would still spit out a voltage but the ECU would do nothing with it. So, what did you mean by 'work'?
If you disabled the KS, then why bother asking "Should I replace it?"

Re: What does "Knock Sensor" DO??? (EE_Chris)
Sorry for the confusion. Heres my situation: I was throwing a knock sensor code (before chipped) so I'm assuming the knock sensor is broken. So I got a P06 chipped so it doesn't throw a code anymore. I know it disabled the knock sensor, but is my engine in danger b/c the knock sensor is still broken? Sorry I too don't exactly know how a knock sensor works. I just wanted to get that cleared up so I don't go buy a knock sensor if I dont need one.

it's not really in danger. you can always get an a/f ratio guage, and monitor it manually. I've been running my h22 for a year off a p28 that doesn't have knock. I've never had a problem, but then again I'm running rich too... Did you ever check to make sure it was wired to the correct pinout on the ecu? It might not be a faulty sensor just because you get a cel.

hows the motor running, ever did a compression test ? this could be some of the ways to tell if its broken or not. without acutally replacing it , the knock sensor detects detonation as said before..

knock sensors like to take a crap either way. Quartz element get beaten to **** and it eventually just grounds out. I dealed with alot of those on nissans. I would just disable it and just set you timing to stock and make sure you aren't running lean that's it. And make sure that your ECU doesn't have horrible advanced timing curves.

with the chip its running really rich. i have an automter a/f ratio gauge (yes i know its basically just a light show) i did a compression test when i first got it (september 04) and the last one i did was maybe in december. first one the #'s were pretty off/low. i think it was like 190, 180, 195, 160. the last one was like 200,190,190, 200.

the compression numbers look good ,sounds like a broken knock ... is your car wired for knock?
I asked the question about the ecu and the motor just to make sure you were runing the right fuel map (ecu) for the motor you have
