Is it a waste to just drain the tranny and not do a complete flush?

Default Is it a waste to just drain the tranny and not do a complete flush?

I now see that when you drain the tranny fluid that over half the fluid is not removed. The local honda dealer wants $70 to completely flush the auto tranny in my 98 Civic. My dad was saying that it's pointless to just drain the fluid since you're still leaving 50%+ of the old fluid in. But, I hear that the drain bolt is magnetic which sucks all the debris (if any are inside) to the bolt for easy removal of the harmful materials.

Anyhow, I will just feel better knowing that I have some new fluid in there......

Is it a waste and only a complete flush be done?
I have 50k on the motor and this is the first drain.
I am going to get it completely flushed by the end of the year which should not even be 60k on the motor then.

Wanna get more out?

Disconnect the transmission coolant tubes to the radiator.

But, my $0.02 - it is not a waste of time to just drain out the drain hole. You remove 50% of the fluid each time. I change it once a year in my wife's 96 EX. In the six years I've changed it six times. If you get 50% out each time, then it figures like this:

1st year - 50% original fluid left.
2nd year - 25% original fluid left.
3rd year - 12.5% original fluid left.
4th year - 6.25% original fluid left.
5th year - 3.125% original fluid left.
6th year - 1.5625% original fluid left.

This a waste of time? About 15 quarts of tranny fluid used in six years. Nearly new performance tranny fluid all six years. Less than 2% of original fluid left in the tranny. Worth it? You bet.

BTW, don't let the tranny run 50,000 without a change. That's not good for long term reliability. OK if you don't plan on more than 150,000 on the tranny, but if you want more, change more often.

no I killed a main shaft bearing in my 93 ex coupe. It was all my fault for not changing the fluid.

To be honest I had NO idea it was as simple as to remove a bolt. So, I am going to change my fluid every 3rd oil change from here out. That's every 15k since I use Mobil 1 every 5k.

I am still going to get the complete flush by the end of the year. Probably just do that every 50k. and just drain every 15k.

You should change your fluid every 30k for harsh conditions and 45k under normal driving conditions...

I usually just drain, refill, turn on car for a minute. Check to seehow clean the fluid is, drain if still dirty, refill, turn on car for a minute. I usually do this 2-3 times til the fluid is clear.

If you drive like most of us do, once a year. If you drive like my grandmother, once every 30,000 miles.
