I have a 97 Honda Civic EX. I bought it about a year ago and I have never been able to use my key to open the trunk or the trunk lock. I did a little research and assumed that I had been given a valet key, seeing as it opens the doors and turns on the car. I went to a local Honda dealer, asked if they could cut a new master key for me, and they told me that 97 Civics didn't come with a master or valet key, and that the previous owner must have changed out the lock on the trunk, and it would cost $150 to re-tumble it. Now I'm no expert, but I don't see why anyone would change out the lock on the trunk. I just wanted to know if 97 Civics came with a valet and master key, so I can try to get a new master key cut, if not, I'll just live with not being able to open the trunk with the key.

Your dealer must be the stupidest dealer ever. My 96 came with 2 reg keys and a valet.

The key you are using does it have a black plastic head is it round? if so it is a valet.

I would use your vin and have another dealer cut you a master key.

Unless they stopped in 97............that is the question.

Wait........a thought, you know the little lock by the trunk release.....the key you have can you open it or lock it?

No the key I have does not lock or unlock that box by the trunk release.

ok so the 2 keys to the left will be the valet keys and the wider one to the right is the master key that opens your trunk and locks the trunk release go to another honda dealer the one you went to didnt just want to take his time to do it for you

nope my 99 ex coupe came with all 3 keys the dealer didnt want to look it up and cut the key unless the car is a theft recovery and the stole the trunk and it was replaced or damaged like the last post says

My key doesn't look like either of these. It's just all metal. Must be a copy or something like that. I'm pretty sure the car was never in any accidents that would warrant changing out the trunk lock. I think the main problem is that the Honda dealer was an idiot. The bad part is that the only other Honda dealer is a couple hours away. Maybe I can go back to that one and tell them to check again?

Maybe it was an idiot employee that's all. Try someone else, or call honda north america and tell them you need another key made and have them communicate that to the dealer on your behalf.

Y don't u call a locksmith? Will be kinda expensive but if the dealer key is not correct either then you will have to call one anyways...

Yes they did come with a valet and master key (except hatchbacks)

Go to a Honda dealer and have them cut you a key off the VIN number.

when I bought my 00 civic ex, I only had the valet key.

It was thicker then the regular key, so I couldn't open either locks as well.

I went to a lock smith and they just made a thinner copy of the key and it worked fine
