in a gsr tranny, can you open up the tranny and poor transmission fluid in there? cause i've heard that those trannies are sealed shut and there's no such thing as tranny fluid for my tranny? sorry, really noob question but i still can't get in gear well w/o forcing it in there.. my other buddy told me i could open it up and poor 10w-30 in the tranny and it will go into gear more? haha

It helps to place simple tech questions directly in the thread title. Edited.

Honda MTF is preferred. Redline, Syncromesh, and others are out there. And when our Civics were first made, 10w-30 was specified for transmission fluid.

The MTF is going to have more phosphorous and zinc, which are anti wear components. If you live in a very cold climate, consider a synthetic fluid since it won't thicken in the cold, but it will also lubricate better. For the ~2 quarts you'll need, you can get good fluid for under $20.

As for the drain, look at the case from the passenger side. There will be a plug about 1/3 up and a one close to the bottom. There's only 3 cap type things, and if you see a clip inside, it's not either of the two you want.
To make it easier to fill the transmission, remove your intake tube, clean around the VSS sensor, remove the VSS (8mm socket I believe) and stick a funnel down in there. You still have to take the fill plug out, but this is way easier to get fluid in. Otherwise you need a long tube, a funnel and it always makes a big mess.

When I asked Honda what to use they told me that they use 10w30 for anything 2000 and below and Honda MTF for anything above. I used Royal Purple Syncromax and that **** just continiously made noise. I heard good things about Syncromesh though.

also.. am i supposed to fill until it overflows a little? and can't i just put in "transmission fluid" found at autozone?
