Default trying to remove axle problems. castle nut spinning along with balljoint

hey guys,

I'm trying to get the castle nut off to get the axle out, but it along with the balljoint? or the bolt the nut is on is spinning. both the nut and bolt are spinning, i tried putting a jack under the disc and no luck, any more ideas? thanks

are you trying to take the axle nut out with the car on jack stands? if you are...you are a total newb...easiest way is to have the car on the ground with the wheel still on and first loosen it up then you can jack the car up....

sigh...

sorry if it was unclear, not the nut on the axle, the castle nut on the lower ball joint. the castle nut along with the lower ball joint are spinning when i try to remove the nut.

don't heat it or you will melt the ball joint boot, then you will have to replace the ball joint. Use an impact gun if you have one and a jack stand under the control arm blip the gun a few times in the off dir this will usually work

the boot wont melt...unless you put it ON the boot itself

the real problem is going to be getting this back together when youre done - i suggest putting a new balljoint in as well

Nope, you're the newb.

This is a common problem, when the ball joint is worn, the ball will spin in the socket. You may as well mutilate the thing whatever way you need to to get the nut off. Easiest way is to just get a grinder and cut it off, takes all of 2 minutes. You have to replace the ball joint because you won't be able to tighten the nut back down to spec either... its just going to spin then too.

ok well you could heat it but it will end up melting the boot and all the greas in it what i do is just have some one stand on the rotor or if you are alone take a big cresant rench and squeaze the ball joint in to the knuckle because the ball joint is a taper so the harder you squeze the to together the less it will spin or using an impact is best when doing this. hope it helps and that you can read this.lol

holy hell...
The boot wont melt!
Even if it did...who cares? The joint needs to be replaced anyways, because its going to be the same story when it needs to be reassembled.

so the ball joint is junk just because it spins with the nut? This thread is full of stupid responses. put a touch of heat to it or blast it with an impact...or both. this happens all the time, just grease the threads when reinstalling and it will be mint.

if the ball joint just spins, that can happen with older joints. if you use an impact, air or electric, it will provide enough torque to zip the castle nut off or on.

i just had this problem last week and thought that i would have to replace the whole damn thing. then i used air. air is wonderful.
