So i recently noticed my timing belt was very loose. So i took off my belt made sure i hadnt skipped a tooth. put my timing belt back on and could not get the belt to tighten just by mearly turning the crank a couple teeth and tightening tensioner. So i manually pushed up on tensioner and tightened it down and now my belts tight and good to go i thought. So today i was driving my car and i got on it pretty good and then i here a whine coming from timing belt area. pull over and see the spring has come off the post on the block and is hitting my belt. So I tried swinging it back on the post but its obviously not tight on there. It would def fall off again. So i was able to just take of the spring. Was wondering if it ok to run my car withought it for the time being.. The tensioner is bolted tight and my belt feels good still. Maybe the spring was just to old? or somehow was stretched? any opinions are appreciated. thanks

the springs do wear out after a while, i wouldnt drive it to much without replacing it, there like 3 bucks

The spring causes the tensioner to apply tension to the timing belt...after its bolt has been loosened a little to let that action happen. When you turn the crank a couple teeth and tighten that bolt back down, you could lend that spring to your friend as it now has no impact on keeping tension on the timing belt.
