If you ground the temp sending unit wire in the connector to the engine, does the temp reading in the gauge rise? If not, the wire or gauge is a bad.

i've yet to try that. but from everything i've read, that's not the sensor I want because it has two wires. All the forums i've read say to replace the sensor with one wire, by the two wire sensor under the distributor, but I looked and do not have one?

There IS a 1-wire temp sending unit under the distributor. Look again or post pictures.

Thanks for the picture. Hopefully it helps! By chance, is that sensor available at autozone, advance auto, etc., or is it a dealer part that I have to get at a dealer? ha when I looked earlier today, the only one wire sensor i could find was the one under the intake on the firewall side of the motor.

The sender unit under the distributor provides signals for the temp gauge in the cluster. Ground the wire in the connector to see whether the temp gauge reading rises.

But once again, test it before replacing it -- I deal in reality, not hypotheticals.

Fair enough! I'll test it either tomorrow or tuesday and let you know what happens. Thanks again!

hey sorry it took so long to get back to you about the situation. The reason I couldnt find it was because the previous owner must have broken the sensor off.. haha but i got it out, replaced it and the gauge works now.. thanks for all the help!
