Default Tach issue for my 96 Civic with 00 GSR swap

I have a 96 EK DX that has no tach. So I swapped it for an EX cluster with tach. I tried two known working EX clusters and the tach still doesn't work. I then looked the blue wire that is C8 of the 13 pin plug.

link for picture

C8 for the tach is connected to the plug. So now I'm a bit lost. Is there anyway I can test for:

1. signal from the wire to the cluster.
2. tach DOES indeed work without putting in another EK.

Thanks!

If you have a scan tool that reads live data, you could check whether the ECU is getting the tach signal. Did you check the C8 pin in the cluster connector? Make sure the blue tach wire is attached to the ICM. Then check for end-to-end continuity of the blue wire from the ICM to the cluster. If that's fine, the ICM may be bad.

I do not have a scan tool unfortunately. What is ICM? sorry I don't know a lot of the terms.

The tach receives its signal from the ignition control module (ICM) inside the distributor.

okay I've replaced that before in my other car. I will check that. Is there certain voltage I should be looking for?

will check if it's attached to ICM first.

and of course I'm being an idiot. I forgot to mention that I have a GSR swap in it out of a 2000 teg. would that make a difference?

That could, I know when a buddy of mine threw a EX cluster in his DX it worked fine.
So the swap might be the problem

Hmmm...99-00 Civics get their tach signal from the ECU rather than from the ICM. If the 00 GSR is the same, then your distributor may not have a blue wire. Check that first.

I also updated your thread title.

There is a solid blue wire connected to the ICM.... see pic

Can ICM be bad even though I was able to drive it??

How many wires do you have coming out of the B18 distributor? It may not be wired for the tach

any updates on this? i'm having the same issue after swapping out my timing belt...disconnected the distributor connector and plugged it back in and now my tach stopped working. i think it may be a loose connection somewhere, does anyone know which blue wire out of the distributor is the actual tach wire, my distributor has 2-3 different blue wires?

i have a gsr swap in my 97 hatch as well.
