Swapping d15b into 97dx with d16y7 what will work?
Hi,
I have had rediculous trouble with my 97 dx coupe, am now at the point where I have decided to swap a new engine in. It currently has a y7 (non-vtec). I want to put a d15b in, but I have some questions. When looking at ones to buy, there are different years to choose from (92-95, 96-00 etc) what is the difference, will they all fit in my car the same, using my current tranny? Is it just different v-tec, and is the v-tech difference worth it> the 96 up ones with 3 stages are a little harder to find it seems, and are a little more expensive. I'm only looking to spend around 600, I know that I will need a new ecu, and figure some kind of wiring for it, but is that it? Will the 15b bolt into my current motor mounts? Sorry, I know thats a lot of questions, but I've looked in the threads and cant find much about this specific swap. THANKS FOR THE HELP

If you are looking to do this with as much ease as possible you want the 96+ year motor. This will save you from re-pinning and older distributor aswell as changing injectors.
any SOHC motor you buy will mate up to your current tranny and you should be able get the new motor with an ECU for no more than $500 depending on where you buy one.
Another thing to keep in mind is depending on what state you live in you may or may not be able to swap in an older year motor than what your car is. So if your car is a 97 then you will need a motor from a 97 or newer car.

I am in PA, I don't know of any such restrictions, so I am not too worried about that... What do you mean by re-pinning the distributer... I think that the new motors that I have been looking at come with a distributer, injectors too. Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by as much ease as possible? Wouldn't the only thing be motor mounts... and that's what I was asking if it would be a direct drop in... have you gotten any engines from a dealer that you would recommend, or know of any?

You Want to get just the normal D15B. My friend had a stage 3 and it was not as good as the D15B. YEah any D series motor swaps should just bolt right on. Pending on your ECu if you need a new one. And yeah I thought it mattered what year motor you have but I live in Cali. SO they really care.

OBD1 JDM D15B Vtec, Reuse your alternator and injectors. Swap the CYP/CKP/TDC sensors from your old Y7 distributor into the D15B distributor case. Run Vtec wiring, you will need to purchase an OBD2A to OBD1 adapter harness for the ECU and use a P28 chipped with P08 maps. Reuse all your original mounts. Do not go with the 3 stage D15B Vtec unless you feel like trying to hunt down the uber rare P2J ECU that goes with it.
Things to be aware of:
-The car will no longer communicate with the diagnostic port meaning the car will not pass inspection in several states.
-The engine is older than the car, again this wont pass inspections in some states.
-The car must be a manual, you can't back date an automatic civic to OBD1 and have a functioning automatic tranny.

I like that idea haha for kicks... hopefully this 15b will be a big enough improvement already over the 16y7... I know it will.

One more thing... as I said in the first post... the D15B's are listed on all the websites as "92-95" or "96-00" which one is better, or will be easier to swap. --I think I know the answer but just in case the old ones had some desireable trait that I don't know about. Thanks again.

i got the 96-00 now... drove to nyc to get it, it supposedly has 30k on it from japan. I haven't got another ecu yet though, can I use the ecu i have for a couple days, and just not have v-tec until the other one arrives?
Also, where would i get the harness and ecu chip you were talking about

i have obd2, and the new one is obd2... why all of the swapping? It came with an alternater. Another question... above the ac compressor, there is a wierd pulley looking thing that wasn't on my d16y7, with a decent size hose to it, what is it and what do i do with it?

Okay, I have a feeling by reading this thread that you have no idea what OBD1 and OBD2 means...you didn't even listen to any of the advice you were given.
The engine you just purchased will be very difficult to find an ECU for. This is why you were advised to buy the 92-95 engine and swap a few components from your old engine.
And now since you made a new thread, nobody there will know the history of your problems. Not to mention that somebody who finds this thread later and wanting help/advice will have to go find your new thread, too. It sounds like you're new to the whole forum thing.
Good luck

Re: Swapping d15b into 97dx with d16y7 what will work?
Apparently you didn't look at thread #2, you must have missed that one. I compeltely understand what OBD1 and OBD2 are and that the ecu will be hard to find/expensive...
But anyways, as soon as I started a new thread I got a reply... funny huh... as opposed to waiting 3 days on the old one without a post... wierd I know. Oh... and I listed the exact name for the new thread so that anyone else could easily find it unless they don't know how to use a search... so... that answers that one. Also you can read that I only have 28 posts... so yah, that would be the easiest way to tell that I'm new to the forum, what was that supposed to mean anyways... you were never new to a forum?
Now
Could you just understand my current situation.... I HAVE A NEW ENGINE... DUAL V-TEC SOLENOIDS... CAN I RUN MY CAR ON THE OLD COMPUTER WITHOUT USING THE V-TEC OR NOT. thats all.

the 96+ needs a p2j ecu...there's a couple on ebay. it used the 3 wire iacv like the y7's, all you need to do is wire vtec

Re: Swapping d15b into 97dx with d16y7 what will work?
Is the P2J the only number that I have to worry about?
Like for example HONDA 37820-P2J-J62 ECU would work?
Because it just went for 11.50 on ebay.
or do I have to worry about the first 5 and last 3 too? Just for future knowledge, what do those other numbers mean?

Re: Swapping d15b into 97dx with d16y7 what will work?
Your best bet is to get the d15b from a 92-95, get a intake manifold, wiring harness, and ecu from a y8 (make sure its from a 96-98 ex) and u have to swap a few parts from your old motor on it like your oil pump because i believe it has the mount for the crank position sensor on it. and if u can get the lsd trans that usually comes with those motors
