stupid noob question about rear fold down seats - 2000 hx
I have a new to me 2000 Honda civic hx and have a stupid question..
I figured how to fold down the rear seats from within the trunk.. but.. I don't have a key that fits the lock on the rear deck...
The question is.. what doe the lock thing do? Does it lock it so you can't drop the seats down or does the lock looking thing allow you to drop the seats from within the car?
I read about a valet key vrs master key and I "think" I have the master key.. The key I have works in both doors, ignition, trunk and the lock for the fuel door/inside trunk release lever.
If I do have a master key that doesn't match the rear seat lock how hard is it to get a replacement key (or pull the lock so I can take it to a locksmith to key it to match my current key)..
There is a chance all the doors/ignition were changed but I don't know as I've only owned this car for < 1 week..
Thanks in advance for any info you can give..

Sounds like you've got the right key, mines the same, expect my one key works for everything. Could just be that the lock for your rear seats is buggered up. I never use that lock for my seats anyways, I just reach in thru the trunk and move the linkage to fold them down. And yeah, all that lock does is allow you to fold the seats down from within the car.

Thanks for the post.. At least now I know what it is used for.. and know that I don't "need" that key.
I'll see how easy it is to pull.. if its easy I'll take it out and have a locksmith try to rekey it..

The valet key should only open doors and start the car, it should not work for the trunk or the seat lock. The master key works for everything. The lock for the rear seats is easy to remove, just take out the rear window panel, and it's like two screws holding the lock in place. And yeah, I've never used the valet key. Who is going to valet park their Civic in the first place?

If you can open the trunk and lock the thing on the driver's floor, you have the master key.
Sounds like the seat cylinder is messed up somehow. It's pretty easy to mess it up if the rear deck was removed for rear speaker installation.
Oh, and what it does is you turn it one way and the seat on that side releases. Turn it the other way and the other seat releases. When you latch the seats back up they lock automatically.
The valet key and such is a security feature. Yes, some people might valet it. Or you could have someone driving it for whatever reason and for whatever reason you don't want them in the trunk. It could at least make it more difficult for someone to get in the trunk if they break in.
