Default Strange idle surging and mpg drop..

Hey guys so another question that i have is my car is idling a little strange it kinda shakes then i press a little in the gas pedal and it stops shaking but you can hear the engine rev up and down a little then you press it for a little more and this stops in neutral and park its not that bad this is the only thing that happens but on drive and r it just sounds sluggish and without any power until i press the pedal and it gets better if i dont and just put it in drive most of the times it will just die... another thing is im getting really bad gas millage and the exhaust smells like gas when on.. Would appreciate your help my friends

That seems like a quick jump on the gun there, I'm sure plenty of other things can contribute to the symptoms the OP is seeing. Did you compression test the engine? This might be your answer as to why it's sluggish and have you adjusted your idle screw or cleaned out your IACV recently? If not, do that. Steps are in the FAQ stickies for both test I mentioned.
Good luck.

Thanks for the manual guys and thank you for the suggestions.. will try that today when i get of off work will post as soon as I've done it.. or in case i have a doubt haha.. and do you guys think uploading a video would help determine the problem maybe with the noises that can be heard? I'm also thinking maybe my timing could be wrong.. will anything contribute? Will take pictures or video of anything you guys tell me to.

Any additional info would help just to confirm things, video the sound and take some of the timing marks, cam and crank. Cover will have to come off but to verify, that's what you'll have to do. What do you mean will anything contribute? As in would the timing contribute to the symptoms you are experiencing? Yes, timing would effect the idle and possibly explain the surging. Have a timing light handy?

Turns out the distributor was a little off i messed around with it and now the cars a little better i cheked the iac valve and im missing one of the lines i have no clue what its function is.. apperantly my mpg has incresed a little i went to a shop and they used transmission oil to clean my o2 sensor i dont know if this really helped im still getting the cel for the o2 sensor The car is still dieing (at times) on Drive and Reverse.. the guys there said it was the iac valve and nothing alse but im not so sure about this.. any info would be great..
When getting cel codes i still get a code for the o2 and a code for the iac valve..

Have you cleared the codes since the recent work that's been done to the car?

How are you "missing" a line for your IACV? If you were just missing one line, you would be spraying coolant all over the place, unless it was capped...which is just stupid.

That line is coming off of your IACV, and goes to a small nipple, either on the water tube on the back of the engine, or on your thermostat housing. If you don't have it, then your IACV and FITV aren't getting a flow of coolant, and can't do their jobs. Get a replacement line. It doesn't have to be anything special - just a length of tube from your local parts store. Install it.

hmm soo your saying possibly the iacv still works? its just not geting the coolent? wouldent i have a leak some where from the missing line that feeds the iacv?

Capped? as in some one plugged them? would this make any sense? would there be a reason for someone to do this?

Yeah the car is a peace of poo

Capped, like someone put a rubber cap over the nipple. Of course there would be a reason - there's always a reason whenever anyone does anything. Are there any good reasons? No.

LOL, well ill see if i can buy a hose that can fit in there and ill try to look for the place where it should go.. if you have pics of where it might go i would appreciate.. soo assuming i find the place hook the line up reset codes and restart engine i should have a stable idle now right? im glad theres not a good reason.. i heard somewhere you gain extra power or something by keeping it like that? sounds kinda stupid but what do i know im just a simple noob could the car be affected by the coolant coming in and this is why they decided to cap it? i noticed just now i have a nother loose hose... im not sure what it does or what it is (im a noob remember)
heres a picture!
EDIT: the middle hose from the little can

the one thats loose is the middle hose

You said you have a 93 civic, what trim level? CX/DX/SI/VX.

Then also, look on the front of the motor (side facing the radiator) and find the sqare 2-3 inch flat spot, it should have a D15 number or D16 stamped into that square, can you provide whether it says D15B8, D15B7, D15Z1 or D16Z6?

I can provide all the FSM pages for these hoses you have issues for and we can get your 93 up and running properly. But first we need to know the motor that is in it, and the trim level of the car to verify it's still the stock motor.
:`) thanks my friend that all i want to do get this peace of junk running correctly because its just sad civics here are pretty expensive.. i bought it thinking it would be a great and reliable car and what i got was a money pit for a while and a bunch of dishonest mechanics..

My car is a DX coupe
the flat plate says D15 B7
