Straight Cut gear noise in first gear.
95 Civic EX 5MT, 150k miles
Okay. So today I noticed that around half the time I took off in first gear, my car made a VERY loud straight cut gear whine from the front end (im assuming the transmission). Only in first gear, and not on every single time I took off. It was on and off. As soon as i shift to second gear, the noise disappears. It sounds EXACTLY like reverse gear, just the noise is magnified.
It just started this today. I also feel it necessary to mention a few details:
-- My ISB has been noisy ever since I bought the car, January of last year.
--After driving for awhile today with this first gear issue, at ONE time It made a more faint straight cut gear whine in second gear, but it never happened again.
--One time I was doing fast shifts, 1 to 2, then on my shift from 2 to 3 (very fast in and out of the clutch, where the car kinda lurches a little bit) I heard the noise even fainter in third gear. I could not replicate this again.
What is going on here? I've heard 1st gear bearing might be bad, I also read my clutch could be giving me issues?
I replaced my tranny fluid with Honda OEM a month and a half ago, with no noticeable effects.

Re: Straight Cut gear noise in first gear.
And your "fast shift" stupidity. If the car is lurching, you're shifting wrong. You're beating on a transmission that you admit is failing, with the ISB going out. You've probably sent the ISB from failing, to "what the **** are you doing to me", which would perfectly explain the problems you're having. "Fast shifting" is not healthy for a standard, synchronized transmission. I don't care what you've seen them do in movies - it doesn't work like that.

Once again, I did it ONE time. So that's not the issue here.
Still waiting for help here. My internet searches aren't really getting me moving in the right direction.

Re: Straight Cut gear noise in first gear.
UPDATE!!!!!
I noticed as i was driving around just now, the car shuddered when taking off. It felt almost floaty. Rough launches. The shift **** vibrated a **** ton decelerating in 4th gear. There were god awful loud screeches, sounding like wet things squeaking together, and loud knocking and rattling noises. At one point i swear i smelled transmission fluid. I noticed starting in second gear made this whole scenario more livable, but as i limped her home I was on the edge of my seat. I parked her for now. Its rainy and dark outside so please dont ask me to check for fluid leaks or the like.
What happened?

My first instinct was to sell the bitch. But I thought maybe if I replace the ISB, it will run again? Can anybody confirm this? It makes really nasty noises but stops when i push the clutch in, so im assuming the ISB broke or something.

Re: Straight Cut gear noise in first gear.
OP so for over a year and half you have had what you think is an ISB noise and now you are surprised that your trans is fucked? Muahahahahahahahaaahhhha.
Why would you not fix the problem imediately? Why even bother changing the trans fluid knowing quite well you have an internal problem?
Take this trans out, scrap it and find another one...

Re: Straight Cut gear noise in first gear.
Nobodies gonna be able to tell you that because...........basicly we don't know whats going inside YOUR transmission. If you have the ***** to take it apart and JUST replace the bearing than go for it, what do you have to lose but time. At least you can say you were able to take apart a transmission.

Re: Straight Cut gear noise in first gear.
I drove with a failing ISB for a little over a year, but I also didn't drive it harder than your average grandmother until I fixed it. You, on the other hand, are ragging on your car and wondering why it's shitting on you. At this point, you may have very well shot out your ISB, and caused enough endplay to damage your gearsets, or even your differential.
Take the transmission off. Rip into it, measure everything for spec, and replace ALL of your bearings, seals, and synchros. While you're doing that, start hoping that you didn't chew down your gears, bend your shift forks, or wallor out any mounting points for your shafts.

i wish i woulda known the second part, about taking it easy. I did about 5 or 6 hard launches, IE smoking the tires, in the past few months. I also drag race from time to time. Musta blown up the ISB pullin dat sheet
