Default speedometer dont work

i bought a 98 honda civic coupe when i got it the speedometer was not working. it reads everything like the feul and the rpms the mileage is stuck and the mph doesnt work. i ran CEL on it code came up for the speed sensor. the check engine light went off but the speedometer still doesnt work. any ideas how to fix this problem.

it is called vss and it's located on top of the tranny.

Theres two things that can cause this. First thing i would do is locate the vehicle speed sensor (vss) and make sure the plug from the engine harness is plugged in. Most likely the sensor went out and you need to replace it. I dout that theres a problem with your cluster.

remove the VSS (speed sensor) on top of the tranny in the back right. Its one 10mm bolt and take it off. Replace it with any other one from a single cam or dual cam, etc and check the harness plug that plugs into the sensor to see if its damaged or not. Put it back in and bam. You should be good

i have the same issue, but i did an obd1 swap into my 98 hatchback. i was told, well i read on the internet somewhere about this issue with the VSS sensor. i swapped out to my third cluster. swapped out VSS sensors twice and nothing happened! didn't fix the problem! before the swap, everything was in working order...checked all the plugs to make sure they were connected and they were...

they said to check voltage at the plug...i didn't do that cause i don't have a voltage tester...

swapped tranny cause i thought it was a bad tranny...nothing!

anyways...read somewhere on line in the web world that the wiring is probably rubbing up against the intake manifold that is why the VSS isn't working

check behind/under the intake manifold to see if you have uncovered wiring touching the manifold...if so ziptie that away from the manifold...

good luck...i know it is sort of confusing of what i typed...confusing myself...but yea...

Hey ek4_b16a: Did tieing off the wiring bundles under the manifold fix your speedometer? What I've read says that failure mode generally triggered the check engine light and/or burned a fuse. Did you have CEL and/or blown fuse symptom or did this fix your speedo even though you didn't have those symptoms?

RioSmAn: Does your speedo just stay on zero, or is it intermittent...occasionally coming to life for short bursts, but quivering and jerking before it goes back to sleep on zero? I have this intermittent behavior on mine. I tried replaceing VSS sensor (just the above-tranny-case portion, because lower stem is only mechanical and it all looked good and because when I pulled it I could see no wear on driven gear and the differential gear that drives it in the tranny was turning & looked to be fine). VSS replacement didn't work, but it was a VSS from junk yard so not 100% sure it works. Then I replaced cluster w/ one from junkyard (again not 100% sure it works), but speedo behavior didn't change.

I've been through the Honda service manual to follow debug flowchart on page 23-140/141 (Speedo/Trip Meter/Odometer Troubleshooting). Everything is OK until I get to the step that says check the voltage on the VSS connector YELLOW/WHITE pin to see it is "APPROX 5V OR MORE". Mine gets 4.7 V. Is that "approx 5V"? I don't know. Anybody else out there w/ a working speedo on a 92-95 Civic, could you disconnect your speedo sensor and measure voltage between yellow/white and body ground and tell us what you get???
