Solution to Civic LX cracked exhaust manifold
Hey guys. I know the civic LX model in perticular tends to develop cracks on the exhaust manifold for some reason... Right now I am dealing with this issue on my 97... I keep rewelding it but obcourse it just recracks after a week or two...
I want to replaced it... But i want something different because i dont want it to just crack again... I also absolutely hate how the manifold and catalytic converter are one piece....
So what are some of the solutions some of you have utilized?
Preferably I would like the cheapest solution but this exhaust manifold is going to be disposed of so the solution of course would have to include buying something else cause i dont want to reuse this design.
For now Im thinking maybe getting the exhaust system from one of the other models like the stick shift EX model or something like that..
Does anyone have any solutions for this problem? has anyone bought those manifolds off ebay? they say they arent legal in california Im guessing its cause it wont pass smog maybe.... but if it does pass smog then i dont really give a *#$%

If you go the EX manifold/cat route it will look completely stock and the smog place probably won't notice. You still might have smog problems if you get an attentive smog tech. CA smog regs say you can't move the location of the stock cat. You'll also have to extend the second o2 wires to the sensor will reach the new location which could throw a red flag to the smog tech if it looks like a hack job.
I would order one online and hope it passes. Companies have to pay to have their smog products approved by CA. For some companies it's just easier to say they aren't legal in CA than pay the fees.
