Inspection

My favorite tranny removal/dissassembly. I've used it for 3 tranny dissassemblies.

Another good write-up for tranny removal.

Also Helm's has a good guie for taking apart transmissions. I even have a color copy I found at the shop I fooled around at.

(PSSSttt, BTW I found those in the 2nd thread in the forum, it's stickies and says "***Post Links to Helpful FAQs So We Can Get an Archive Going***")

the midddle one helps alot but is there a pic of the snap ring?

the snap ring he is talking about is it where you would look to find the pin going across to see if a d15b trans is lsd or not. in that area where the axels are inserted/?

Easiest way to tell if you have lsd is look for the LSD stamp on the tranny.

Or burn out and if you have two rubber tracks you have lsd.

My non-lsd y7 only leaves 1 track. Both spin a little, but the right definately spins a lot faster.

Here's my hands on experience:

Lay the tranny on it's face (input shaft facing the floor). Put your knee where the starter goes and pry the snap right apart with a pair of ring separators. While you're pulling, have a friend (or in my case, NOFX) pry the opposite side of the case with a crowbar. Have the friend keep constant firm pressure and keep prying the snap ring apart. You'll hear a pop, and the snap ring will stay open.

Twist and lift, and it's off.

Just remember, the snap ring stays in the housing, not on the countershaft.
