Default Timing belt changed... Now smoking? What?

I've got a d16z6.

I changed out the water pump, because my car was trying to overheat. Never did. Was rev dependant... if I reved it up the temp came down. Everything seems good now.In changing the WP, I had to take off the timing belt and all that other great stuff.

I lined up the head with the plastic marker and the bottom of the cam gear like it says to in my helms. I noticed two white marks on the crankshaft pulley. Two groups. One 2 mark grouping with a white mark. The other, 3 marks, white in the center. Lined it up with the center white mark. I believe that was correct.

SO, i've checked it. Double checked it. TRIPLE checked it... perfect, dead on.

Now all of a sudden, it seems like i'm smoking? Nothing on startup, as it warms up, i'm getting some smoke if I rev it up high. I could also swear i'm hearing a bit of ping on heavy load. High gear, low speed acceleration. I could be crazy though...

Any ideas? If timings off, would I be smoking? I'd say it's a bluey smoke... so i'm assuming i'm burning oil... but timing would have anything to do with that would it?

Was this all just a coincidence that i'd start burning oil just after changing a water pump??'

Thanks everyone.

You've got the timing advanced. Check the timing and adjust as neccessary.

I've checked it more then 3 times... it's perfect...?

If timing were advanced... would I smoke?
Which way would I move the belt? Clockwise or counter clockwise?

So, should I align my timing belt; on the cam gear using that pointer on the plastic timing belt cover (bottom of gear)? Or should I align the two lines 3 and 9 o'clock with the head?
It looks like if I align using the plastic mark on the timing cover, the other two lines don't hit the head parallel... maybe SLIGHTLY off? Should they? Or are they null/void on a d16z6, and I should ONLY go by that plastic marker?

Also... on the crankshaft pulley, should I be aiming for the white line in the grouping of 3 marks? Or the white mark in the 2 mark grouping?

Thanks!

Use the pointer under the gear on a Z6.
