I hear there is a way to get a key cut for it at the dealership if I take them the vin and my registration. Is it possible and how much? It's just a regular key- no chip. 1998 Civic.

Here's the dilemma: I left my car in a QFC parking lot last night, and my friend drove. We went out and I lost my key. I come back later and my car was gone- it was towed. So now even if I wanted to take the car out of the tow yard I have no key to do it with and they charge 70 bucks a day for storage....

just like you said go to the dealer with vin and proof of ownership and they will cut you a key, it might be 10 bucks if that

yeah, vin, registration and i think insurance(not to sure). but going that way well be a little bit more expensive then just getting it cut. think it was like $25? might not seem a lot but just getting it copied is like $7. and it might not work ether. why, cause it's all about numbers. supposedly they use the vin numbers to dial it into the cutter. and it'll make a copy of what your key should be. doesn't work all the time. you might need to go back and forth to the dealership till they get it right.

I thought a dealer would charge WAY more that than. Maybe in the range of 50 bucks for a plain key like this, but laser cut ones (hondas don't' have them) would be like 100. A key with a chip would be like 150ish.

I hope you learn a lesson from this though, I don't mean to preach but it's like 3 dollars and 5 minutes of your time to cut a key. When I got my car I only had one key first thing I did was I made like 2 extra copies, one that I kept and I gave one to my mom to put in the safe just in case.

yeah, it's not too expensive. but more expensive if you don't have the key. it's like they charge you the labor or something. but the most expensive part is to get the nice honda key.

Too bad it inspired you to post here instead of the much less logical method of calling up your local dealership and asking them...

You people are nuts, To get a master key cut at the dealer you need, Drivers license and registration. I had my title and the worker said he didnt need it.

Edit: Im sure any Picture ID would work, but IDK.

It costed me $5.67 or something like that. Ill look for the recipt if i have to.

I used to deal with these guys all the time, when I worked at a hardware store!

We could cut keys, re-pin locks, and so forth - but for the kinda stuff you're talking about - we called in the pros!

Anyway, that's my recommendation...

the honda dealer here charged me $1.61 for a key and they cut it for free of charge.Just call them.it will be no more than $10

I got a brand new key made when I lost mine, cost me 10 bucks. All I needed was the VIN.

I've done this before. It didn't cost more than $10.

Bring in your VIN, proof of ownership and a photo ID (plus the cash) and they can cut you a new key.

Since 6th gen Civics use the same key for the following:
- Ignition
- Passenger front door
- Driver front door
- Trunk/hatch
- Valet Lock (on floor of some trims)
- Seat lock cylinder on rear deck (coupes and hatches)

Then one or more of those probably wouldn't work either. Granted sometimes peopel replace them all, but it's likely the interior features (valet and seats) would be missed at the very least).

So far I haven't heard of anyone who has had their key cut from the VIN not work. Not that it doesn't happen, but it seems uncommon. Even when my car was stolen I made sure to use the old cylinder so the key would still work.

I've tried getting a key cut at honda before. Mine didn't work. It wasn't even close to being the same key. I still had mine, i didn't loose my original key, but i lost my spare and the original key was so worn out that no one could cut a key off it. when it was in the ignition the door beeper wouldn't even work unless i played with it. So i thought i'd try the vin thing, i ended up paying $40 for key that didn't work, it sucked, and apparently that was a good price. i did get some of that back later on price adjustments on other parts i bought there. What they told me at the dealership is that someone must have changed all the locks before, which seems odd to me, althought the car was originally a courtesy car. anyway to make a long story short i ended up finding my spare key and got 2 new keys cut off that.
