Default P0336 99 EM1 PLEASE HELP!! Pullin my hair out!

I've got a 99 EM1 and have been having the same problem for about a month and a half with my crankshaft position sensor. I've replaced it 3 times since, and same problem actual sensors test fine by themselves. Last wednesday I took the car to a very good mechanic who then scanned more thoroughly... Since crank sensor was working he then cleaned all of the grounds and cleared the codes and it didn't come back on, until last night while I was out with my fiance... Doing the same thing as before with a really bad misfire and will not rev past 3500. Sometimes when I keep driving it will clear itself up and you'll feel it kick back in and drive fine but its really sparatic about when it will do it again. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Just really want some ideas of what I should look for, things to check, etc... I appreciate it guys

try using a different ECU . . . if you can get ahold of one try using the same model that you are using right now . . . or try a JDM ECU they dont look for the crankshaft position sensor . . . or convert to OBD1 they dont look for it either and see what happens . . .

If you're referring to the crank sensor on the oil pump, I've tried the bypass trick that can be found on FF Squad. I will try to find another ecu but can't think of anyone that would have one I could use. The sensor I replaced is the one behind the crank pulley... And when the code comes up it reads "P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor A CKT Range/Performance. I will try to locate another ECU asap and see if it helps. Any other ideas of things I can check?

P0336 indicates a fault in the circuit for the CKP sensor located inside the distributor housing not for the CKF sensor located next to the crank gear. Check the resistance of the CKP sensor and check the wires for an intermittent short or open. If no problems are found, then replace the distributor housing. Swapping in a known good ECU would be the last step.

ECUs rarely go out, sounds like an intemediate short, i would also check and make sure that all engine grounds are good and clean. Like RonJ@ht said the CKP sensor is in dizzy focus around that area. also check harness by dizzy and for continuity and move the wires aroung looking for a resistance change.

Roger that, I will do that, thanks a bunch ron! As always your expert opinion is always greatly appreciated. What is the color coding for the wires to the sensor in the distributor housing? I also thought the sensor wasn't in the dizzy in obd2b cars?

Okay so I checked the dizzy wiring and I can't believe I never saw this, but someone had cut a few of the harness wires and reconnected them with butt connectors, one had come out of the connector...a white one with silver dotting. Reconnected it so hope this fixes it

Thread is 12 years ago. It's best to PM a user and reference the old thread to see if they are still active. Don't expect much though from 12 year old threads. Best practice is to start your own thread with all your car information and reference these old threads if necessary.

The other thread, JRCivic1 gave you solid information prior to it closing.
