I'm going to replace the engine oil pan gasket on my wifes car this weekend, she has a 96 honda civic. I didn't want to pay someone a few hundred bucks to do it

All I need is the gasket, do I need some type of sealant that goes on the gasket or the pan?

I use this



over the entire length of the gasket, not just specific areas. Torquing the nuts and bolts to spec in the proper sequence is also important.

man this weekend I realized that this job actually takes a lot of time. You have to really get in there to remove the oil pan screws, and there is little space between one of the screws and the tranny.

Plus you have to also remove the pipe that runs just under the oil pan.... guess I'm going to see this through some other weekend, more work than I had first anticipated.

use a 1/4 inch air ratchet with a 10 inch extension. after you get that exhaust pipe off and the cover plate on the lower part of the trans that covers the fly wheel or flex plate you should have the pan off in no time. it shouldnt take you more than an hour if you also clean the pan up real good.

i think your car also has a cross meber running under the oil pan as well but its easy to remove as well.

I have to buy some towels to make sure I can clean it up.

So I changed the gasket, what a pain.

Two things, it seems to still be leaking though not as bad as it first was. I think the pan itself might be bad. looks like it got banged up once.

two, the only thing I noticed on my car is during warning it up now, it tends to rev up a few times.

lol. thanks for the encouragement, na the pan was already messed up prior to me removing it, since the car was lowered before I think that caused the damage. I could tell with the dent it already had.

i could understand the bottom of the pan being dinged, but it seems unlikely the pan to block mating surface would have become tweaked somehow. is it possible the leak is coming from higher up? valve cover gasket, cam seal, crank seal, or rear main possibly?

I came to that conclusion, it might be another seal, though not the valve cover gasket since that was replaced and sealed and is no longer leaking.

I'm going to take a look at the cam seal, crank seal, but I think it might be the pan itself.

when changing the oil pan gasket you need to use Honda Bond, its the best thing to use and you will be happy after, the rtv is ok but the Hond Bond is much better. Only put the honda bond around the bolt holes on both sides of the gasket. Note: Do not paste the honda bond on the entire gasket.

Before you open up the gasket I've hear of quite a few people changing out their own and STILL having the leak. I opted to have my mechanic do it and he actually advised against it. He told me to start using 10-30 oil as opposed to the 5-30 the manual said and it didn't leak again after that. I'd say try moving to a more viscous oil before pulling apart the car.

you sould never put silicone on the whole gasket. it defeats the point of even buying a rubber gasket it the first place. It is common on these gaskets when you are replacing them that that you could have left a little metal ring around one of the studs that sicks out of the block causing a "double gasket" effect witch leads to huge leaks. The honda bond should only go in the corners of the rounded out part for the crank to seal imperfections in the corners. older cars are also known to start having rear main seal leaks. clean your IAC for the idle problem.

no such thing as a b15. i assume you mean d15? i would imagine your wifes car has the stock engine in it though right?, in which case it would not be a d15, it'd be a d16y something. if you're not sure, the engine code is stamped to the left of the exhaust header. it will look like this

Yes I meant to say D15 B7 on my 95 civic dx is my engine, my wifes is a 96.
