if you have a good scanner and can watch data on it. moniter the front and rear o2 sensers. if the rear mimics the front your catalytic converter is bad. you could start cheap first with a 3 part top engine cleaner if you dont have a scanner. if that dont work then you will need a converter.

PO420 is the catalitic converter not burning the gases like it is suppose to. If you have already installed a new converter it could be the O2 sensor it self or a mechanical issue. Make sure you don't have any vacumm leaks and your fuel pressure is right. Also make sure the front O2 sensor is switching like it needs to.

Re: (150sol)
well hopefully is not the catalytic converter. which i doubt it will be. if it will be the 02 sensor then in the scanner it will appear 02 sensor. so i doubt that too. i dont have no vaccumm leaks and fuel pressure is ok. thanks for the help though.

I think it's the cat. if it's not a cat, its gonna be the o2 sensor.

if you can t get a scanner get a multimeter and ur voltage on your front o2 sensor should run between .1 -.9 mV and then check the rear o2 sensor it should stay at a constant voltage if it toggles like the first one your cat is not clearing up the gasses like it should and it is bad whether it is new or not

what would be the causes of why the cat is not burnin up the gasses?

From the schools I've gone to say that your converter should last the life of the car as long you keep up the maintance. What causes them (O2) to bad is the heat of the exhaust. In the maintance manuals they are supposed to be changed at 50k intervals. Over time they will have a build up on them slowing there abillity of reading the gasses. There mostly at fault due to dirty air filters or free flow(K&N) type, fuel filter restriction, and oil consumption. No body ever changes them till they have problems. At my shop when a converter does show defective it also gets O2 sensors and fuel filter.
