Normal oil consumption of B16A2?
How much oil consumption is normal for a B16A2? So far I have about 1400 miles since the last oil change(I change every 3000) and I have aleady had to add about 3/4 of a quart to my engine to bring the oil level between the 2 dots. Is it normal to consume that much oil. Also, what scale does the oil dipstick read? Does it guage the entire oil capacity of the oil pan or only a certain amount, like say a quart.
Also, under hard acceleration when I shift my friend who was following me in his car said he saw a quick burst of smoke from my exhaust when I shifted. Could this be a sign of burning oil?

This is what we would call blow-by, this is bad, you need new rings, my suggestion, buy a b20 block and some high compression pistons, then you be straight flossin, since you have to tear it down that far anyway.

but i don't think its your rings, if you are in vtec all the time, a b16 will go thru more oil than a average motor.

Well I do see VTEC daily VERY often, especially on weekends. I've heard of many B-series powerplants, including B16's, that are burning much more oil than me. I really don't think it's my rings either. Right now I'm running Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30. I'm going to change to same brand except 10W-30 on my next oil change. I've heard that this will reduce oil consumption due to 5W-30 being pretty thin.

I use to run Mobile1 synthetic 10W40 and I burned about the same amount of oil. I switched to Castrol synthetic 10W40 and no oil problems here.

Re: Normal oil consumption of B16A2? (PWRVTEC)
So Mobil 1 burns easily? And another thing, Right now I'm running Mobil 1 5w30. I am a bit low and I was wondering if it would be ok if I added 10W30 to the 5w30 oil. Is it bad to mix weights?

not as bad as the $.99 special oil at wal-mart, but the syntec does get some good reviews from people. The only bad thing i've ever heard about it is that it's not "true" synthetic, since it has additives or something, i don't know, i don't consume any oil after 150k so i might not be the best person to comment on it.

Mobil 1 is really the only major fully synthetic. This is where you start off with one
small molecule (chain of atoms). Then through chemistry they add atoms to make
a longer chain molecule. This makes a very good, yet very expensive motor oil.
Most use a mixture of this and regular motor oil to get the similar results. But
most people can’t use the added protection. Synthetic motor oil will still work well
under cold conditions (<20F) and very hot conditions (>100F air temp). If you
don’t expect to see these conditions don’t bother spending the money.

your ring is fine. if u always hit vtec then oil loss is faster. i always get 3/4 - 1qt oil less after a day in raod race track(8-9k shifting for whole day).

well last time i checked oil consumption on a car that new shouldn't be 'normal'....and i have no clue as to why 'vtec' would cause more oil consumption than non-vtec equipped cars?????
