Default No speedo/odometer - trouble shot all the way to cluster

Replaced VSS due to code 17. Speedo hasn't worked since I bought the car. Still nothing. 5v and pulsing with the wheels moving when I tested for voltage @ the ECU. Unplugged the sensor and didn't get any voltage @ the ECU.

I tested the connector clip on the cluster (yel/blue wire) to see if I am getting voltage and it held constant @ 4.6v and didn't really change. I am leaning towards the speedo itself being shot. Im not sure what my next step is. I have read that sometimes the speedo assembly goes? Other times I have read that people just re solder points and it seems to do the job.

I am looking for the next steps to troubleshot on the cluster assuming that I did get the right reading on the cluster connector.

BTW since I have replaced the VSS and put in the new cluster, I can't get the CEL to throw code 17..... Maybe the old cluster was broken and the VSS was dead and now the new cluster is shot too?

Thanks.

Blaze

What car?

It's is odd and unexpected that unplugging the VSS would prevent voltage from reaching the ECU because the 5 reference volts come from the speedo and ECU.

Voltage should only pulse when you spin the front wheel.

Do you measure battery voltage at the Yel/Blu wire in the VSS plug with the key in ON(II)? Have you tested the VSS plug ground wire?

95 Civic P28 ECU

I checked the voltage @ location B10 and used A26 as a ground. I jacked the car up and put it in gear when doing all these tests.

Yes, with the koeo and there was 11.6v and as for the ground I am not sure if I checked it correctly.

Did you check fuses? I blew a fuse when I was wiring up a Gsr cluster in my old EG coupe and I thought it was more comlicated than it was and started checking wires and grounds and soldered joints. Break out the test light and check'em all I think its fuse #15??

You failed to address most points I made.

Also, were the B10 and A26 voltage measurements made with the ECU plugs connected or disconnected.

In the VSS plug, measure voltage between the Yel/Blu wire and Blk wire. If you read battery voltage, the ground wire is fine.

For the ground wire get a multimeter and set it to ohms. Put the positive lead on the blk terminal inside the plug and the ground lead to a ground on the chassis.

When I did that it read .51 I take it that's not adequate?

I appreciate your help Ron, sorry that I didn't answer back to everything that you posted.

I tested B10/A26 when they were connected to the ECU. Ill have to check the ground wire tomorrow.

Marvin1985-

I did that walkthrough but the wires don't match up color wise on the back of the cluster.

H22AFerio - Replaced fuse 15 with a known working fuse w/ no change. Thanks for the diagrams though!

Checked the ground and tested good. Where on the back of the cluster can I test/inspect? If that is the next step...

^^^Doing that can cause you too just waste money. To the OP I had the same situation and it turned out to be a bad ground. I would check all of them

Possibly, I went through 3 or 4 speedometer heads in my Si before I found one that worked consistently (some of the ones I put in worked intermittently)

I would rather troubleshoot before spending anymore money. Thank you for the contributions thus far. I am going to check the grounds here soon on the cluster as well as make sure all the screws are tight on the back. If anyone has taken this any farther, I am all ears.

Not sure what happened tonight but on the way home from the grocery store, it started dancing around. @ WOT it is really funny to watch. I am going to check all connections again and hope it works itself out!

It sounds to me like maybe your speed sensor has gone bad or is maybe just loose. But it could be any of the above problems as well. Good luck. I hope u figure it out.

This may have been mentioned already but I've seen 96-00 Civics having the same issue. There's an issue with a part of the harness rubbing on the intake manifold brace and severing a ground/signal wire. Sounds like a pain in the ***.

The speedo jumping around WOT indicates a ground/connection issue. It is steady under normal driving.
